Accu-metrics genetics service

In addition to 23andMe, I sent a DNA sample to Accu-metrics, which looked like it tested for a broader array of problem alleles than 23andMe. The results I got back stated that I was 'low risk' for Alzheimer's disease, which is different from the results (medium risk) I got back from 23andMe. Does a...

Re: Age 24 and 4/4: Trying to Plan a Healthy (Student) Life

Welcome to the site! I know how hard this news is to bear; news of my status caused a lot of sleepless nights at first (not that I sleep all that well to begin with). The good news is that you've learned your status while you are very young and have lots of time to build up a lifetime what I call 'p...

Re: CSF Ferritin predicts cognitive decline in E4s

Thanks, Simon! most definitely will get my ferritin levels checked. Am waiting for blood work results right now, actually.

Re: AIr Pollution and E4s - not a good mix (more evidence)

DC is one of the most polluted cities in the country, but, unfortunately, I can't go anywhere for some years yet, as my job is here. I grew up in Greenville, SC, though, which is a lot less polluted. Hopefully the years I've spent in the DC-area haven't doomed me. Totally agree WRT lowering PM2.5. I...

Re: CSF Ferritin predicts cognitive decline in E4s

Very interesting. I have restless leg syndrome, and one of the therapies recommended for RLS is intravenous Fe, which would increase ferritin levels. Glad I didn't try this therapy. How ironic that my chronic semi-anemic state might actually be protective.

Re: "Alcohol is biggest lifestyle risk"

I always enjoy research which supports my confirmation bias. I stopped drinking when my father (in early Alzheimer’s) could no longer remember how many drinks he’d consumed before dinner. This contributed to his malnutrition and his eventual perforated ulcer... and it’s what made us move him into a...

Re: Recieved My Results From "23 and Me" Yesterday

Pwestie1218, I also received the news about my apoE status via 23andMe. I was flattened by the news, so my heart goes out to you. The good thing is that we are learning about the risk in time to do something about it, and there ARE a lot of things we can do to mitigate AD risk. So, hang in there, an...

Apo-e4 heterozygous newbie

I am a married, 48-year-old female scientist living in Arlington, VA. I just found out I carry one copy of the apo e4 allele via a 23andMe home DNA test. I don't know my full haplotype or status of any of the other genetic risk factors for AD, early-onset or late-onset. I do have a family history of...
