Re: high HDL

I bet the cut-off of 65 meant that your HDL should at least be 65.

Surgery

I have severe osteoarthritis of my left hip but I am afraid to have surgery. I am concerned about the possibility of developing Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction (POCD). I have an ApoE4 gene which I know increases my risk.

Re: Please give impression - doctor visit next week

I appreciate everyone's feedback. My doctor has told me to reduce fats and then to reduce carbs. I don't see how to do both and stay at a reasonable weight. I actually should gain some weight now and I don't know whether to do it with fats or carbs. I am already eating lots of nuts, avocado, and chi...

Please give impression - doctor visit next week

I've been fighting taking a statin and have been trying to lower my cholesterol with diet and exercise. My efforts however are being stymied by not being able to stop losing weight. In the beginning losing weight was a nice side-effect but now it has become a problem. I can't seem to stop losing wei...

Re: Vitamin D deficiencies due to SNPs

Huh! Well now it makes sense. I had a vit d level of 12 and it was so hard to move it into the 20s. Eventually I got it into the low 30s but that was a couple of years ago and since then I backed down on the amt of supplement (have never liked the idea of supplements). Guess it is time for a blood t...

Re: "Immune cells may act as 'trash compactors', protecting against Alzheimer's"

Large numbers of immune system cells called microglia are found around amyloid plaques, which are the hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. "The cells (microglia) act as a physical barrier that prevents outward expansion of plaques and, therefore, makes them less toxic to the connections between sur...

Re: give up my square of dark chocolate?

Thank you for the feedback and suggestions. I have no idea about my LDL-P. I have never had an NMR done. My cardiologist was even reluctant to test my CRP and homocysteine. He was finally willing because it had been more than 10 years (he thinks it shouldn't be tested more frequently than that). I s...

give up my square of dark chocolate?

I was able to drop my really high cholesterol to 234 but my LDL is still above the recommended limit. My daily square of 86% dark chocolate has 3.5g of saturated fat. I always thought dark chocolate was good for the heart but is that true if you have an E4? Should I give this up in an effort to lowe...
