Re: Shock news from 23and me.

I was taught that evolution was survival of the fittest, which begs the question, what am I doing here? My genes should have been eliminated thousands of years ago.

Re: Shock news from 23and me.

I can`t figure out how one person (me) can be predisposed to so many diseases. My ancestors really sucked!

It seems that alzheimers, age related macular degeneration and coeliac disease weren`t enough, Mother nature decided to dump something else on me...

Apes and apoe4.

I read recently that all of our closest cousins in the animal kingdom, such as chimpanzees and gorillas, have 2 copies of apoe4. If this is true, then how come you never hear of them developing dementia, even the oldest ones in captivity. Their brains apparently don`t shrink with age either, but our...

apoe4 blocking neurogeneration?

Iv`e read that one of the reasons that apoe4 causes alzheimers is that apoe4 blocks regeneration of nerve cells in the brain. If so, why would this be? surely there`s no evolutionary advantage to this. Is there a way to overcome this disadvantage and promote neurogeneration despite having the apoe4 ...
