Re: Any way to find out more about my Dad's diagnosis? Is it worth trying?

I lost my dad to AD 2 1/2 years ago and remember thinking about this issue, as well. I don't think at this point that tracking down his apoe status is the top priority. If anything, I would want to focus on vascular risk factors like high blood pressure, diagnosed or suspected strokes, transient isc...

Re: Diet pre colonoscopy

I had the colonoscopy last year to celebrate my 50th. It was while I was still doing a 60%+ fat diet and found fasting relatively easy, so I just did not each much during the prep-diet period. FWIW, I was worried about what the procedure would do to my gut flora. Within a day, my bathroom "habi...

Re: Hopefully this open data initiative will help AD research ...

Definitely something to watch. I've been involved with a multi-center research program for a long time that pays very close attention to patent stuff. I like the open science initiative and really hope to see examples like this succeed so that other institutions will feel confident about doing the s...

Re: Could Nicotine be protective?

I am similarly skeptical of nicotine for AD. It was being investigated back in the late 80's when I started in neuropsychology. Nothing much has changes as best I can tell. Tacrine, the first approved drug for treatment of AD and cholinergic agonist (as is nicotine), had a minuscule if any clinical ...

Re: A new role for ApoE explains its diverse range of effects, particularly in Alzheimer's

Dr. Mahley weighs in on the new E4 evidence below. It appears to have moved understanding of APOE-ε4 tremendously. I'd love to see full-text if anyone has access- both for the article AND for the comments. Apparently lots of heavy hitters are chiming in... http://www.the-scientist.com/?articles.vie...

Re: Cognitive testing results before and after 5 months of the MEND Therapy

It’s clear from the results of my first assessment that I was, indeed, hitting the incorrect key (and the application did not capture my input). The verbal test showed that I remembered none of the words at the beginning of the assessment, though I recalled 14 of the 15 words at the end of it. I ca...

Re: FYI unfiltered coffee and ldl

I'm wondering if cafestol is really such a bad player. This seems to be a small effect on LDL. A 5-cup a day intake to get a 6-8% rise in LDL. I think the average coffee consumer has more like 2-3 cups a day, but I don't remember where I saw that statistic. Also, at least in controlled trial http://...
