Re: NYTs: What if you knew Alzheimer's was coming for you?
Great article. I particularly liked this passage: Everything about our relationship to Alzheimer’s is in flux right now. The disease — once thought to be unpreventable — is beginning to look more like a multifactorial illness that might result from poor diet, a sedentary lifestyle, chronic inflammat...

Re: Terrified.. Chol results
Just because a plant makes the chemical doesn't make it all perfect like unicorns and fairies. For instance St John's Wort contains an unpredictable MAOI chemical (available as a commercial drug) with multiple possible interactions that a doctor would never ever use as even third or fourth line ant...

Re: Terrified.. Chol results
I wrote to a Chicago dr. who researches APOE .. she wrote me a nice note.. look at the last sentence esp. Please know that my research focuses specifically on treatments targeting APOE4 carriers and we have a number of drugs we are using to “cure” my humanized mice. We are very motivated and passio...

Re: Increasing cancer risk by taking b vitamins
My 2 cents on B-vitamins. Folic acid masking B-12 deficiency is a well-established phenomena. When bread and other foods were initially fortified with folic acid/folate, this was a calculated balance between the minimum amount to prevent neural tube defects and the minimum amount that masks B-12 def...

Re: And now, back to the gut and AD
Susan, I am definitely encouraged to see this. Henrik Zetterberg is one of the authors and he is a big name in AD research. His "stamp of approval" probably moves this from the fringes to more mainstream acceptance. Frank, do you have a sense of how reliable using data from something like ...

Re: And now, back to the gut and AD
I know that the sample size probably wouldn't have allowed it, but it would have been good to know if apoE genotype wasn't a confounding effect. If the n=5 apoE4 carriers looked like the cognitively normal non-carriers, and if the AD cases without apoE4 looked like the E4 AD cases, you could start t...

Blood sugar help- I'm new
Do you have evidence to support the 99/5.5 target or is it a pragmatic cutoff? I'm asking because I'm curious, not because I disagree :) Hi Stavia, the 99/5.5 target is a combination of pragmatism with the dogma from the ADA that pre-diabetes starts at 100/5.6. Interesting snippet from wikipedia: W...

Re: Dolphins and Alzheimer's
Their speculation that it is the long life of the species that make them more susceptable might be argued by the fact that elephants and tortoises don't, as far as we now know, suffer from it. Couldn't it also be argued that few wild animals eat junk food and most, other than our fat pets, get a go...

Re: Dolphins and Alzheimer's
Hi Maureen, They are not saying that these animals have AD, and it is widely acknowledged that amyloid in particular is found in the brains of many people without cognitive impairment. The finding is interesting because this is the first time Alzheimer's-like pathology has been observed in a non-pri...

I would add that some people are genetically predisposed to have elevated fasting glucose. Keeping it under 99 mg/dl (5.5 mmol/l) is critical and may be the best that can be achieved. Snps associated with elevated glucose if you are inclined to check: rs560887 (G,G) Avg. fasting Plasma Glucose 5.18 ...
