Re: Ethics for testing healthy people for research

The short version of this is, if you have any ability to look at apoE genotype effects you should, whether or not this is disclosed to the participant. From first hand knowledge, I would say presently IRB's are generally reluctant to allow genetic testing without explicit permission from subjects. ...

Re: this forum is not user friendly for people experiencing cognitive decline

I suspect you are correct that the neuropsychologists won't offer much in the way of treatment for ftd. What I was thinking is that having a baseline of cognitive testing makes any future testing much more powerful. This is especially important for those on the far ends of the intelligence spectrum....

Re: Monteluekast

Sorry to hear of your breathing challenges. I thought since curcumin seems to be a well-researched anti-inflammatory I would check the literature for its use with asthma and found this. Hope it helps. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4190737/ J Clin Diagn Res. 2014 Aug; 8(8): HC19–HC24. E...

Re: this forum is not user friendly for people experiencing cognitive decline

progranulindefect, Welcome. I hope you can find some good information and support here. There are a lot of smart and caring people here. Your question about self-assessment is an important one. I don't think we have a solid recommendation for this. If we were to rely on subjective responses, they ar...

Re: The Homocysteine/AD connection

For what it's worth, I routinely tested around 11 for homocysteine. After 6 weeks on 1/day of the Kirkland (Costco) Super B-Complex with electrolytes, I was down to 10, another 2 months after increasing to 2/day, my homocysteine was down to 8. I don't know my MTHFR status. The Kirkland version is 3-...

Re: New curcumin study a mile marker but not the destination

Some caution on this study. There were significant baseline differences between the placebo and curcumin groups. No differences between the treatment and placebo groups were observed in terms of the demographic and medical history variables evaluated (Table 1). Nevertheless, the placebo group perfor...

Re: Zilkha Symposium on AD

I feel so freakin doomed some days (today being one). I have low blood pressure and postural hypotension or orthostatic hypotension, whatever you want to call it. I see a cardiologist annually, but take no meds. I eat a lot of salt and focus on fluid intake. Anything else one can do to raise their ...

Re: Zilkha Symposium on AD

Richard, interesting mechanism of cerebral blood flow's relationship with tau and amyloid, would concussions, which do alter the ability to control the cerebral blood pressure, factor in how ultimately CTE/dementia occur? I hope the NFL's funded studies will reap more insights. My dear wife, the pe...

Re: Zilkha Symposium on AD

I'm surprised Jeff Cummings didn't say anything about his bexorotene trial when you asked him about apoE related therapies. Of course that trial looks like it didn't really work, but it was not very well powered to begin with. I vaguely remember him mentioning bexorotene during his talk but not aft...
