Re: New study on nut consumption

Looky, looky- a new study shows that walnuts not only improve the lipid profile, but also REVERSE atherosclerotic plaques,in APOE knock-out mice. This is the FIRST study (to my knowledge) that indicates nuts are cardio-protective for our mousie stunt doubles. Hope it hold true for us :D http://www.r...

Re: Apo e4 as a neurotoxin.

Wow, have you read this synopsis of ApoE biology from the 2012 Keystone Symposium Series? http://www.alzforum.org/sites/default/files/legacy/new/pdf/2012KeystoneSeries.pdf On page 11, they get into ApoE fragmentation. Fragmentation represents but one way in which ApoE4 may increase risk for AD. Many...

Re: Colonoscopy .. anesthesia

Hey Schnooks! Most folks don't need general anesthesia for a colonoscopy...I think something like versed is typically used. It would be great if you could meet with the anesthetist prior to the procedure to find the best solution for you. I would print out studies about how E4 interacts with general...

Re: Primates and 4/4

This is getting out of control. Just thoughts. Keep thinking, LOL! I wrestle with the same questions all the time. This is important stuff; insofar as it's something we have control over. I read about non-Westernized E4s in very different parts of the world, all eating different diets, who ARE able...

EDS/Connective Tissue Disorder & Alzheimer's

I've noticed an inordinate number of us are DXed with EDS (or other connective tissue disorders.) Here's an interesting blog that connects EDS to AD. There's a wealth of info here if you poke around: http://uprightdoctor.wordpress.com/?s=Eds My nephew, age 14, DXed with EDS/POTS, has just been found...

Re: Apo e4 as a neurotoxin.

I'm eager to learn more, Doc. I'm just barely scratching the surface of understanding this now...but I still find it fascinating. So all proteins misfold, but E4s are particularly prone to misfolding. From the Gladstone paper: This makes apoE4 more susceptible to misfolding and instability, to prote...

Re: Fish Oil

We get neither EPA nor DHA from plants. We get a shorter omega-3, linolenic aicd, which gets transformed into both EPA and DHA, as needed. Agreed, and the ALA and LA is transformed into EPA...and to a much smaller extent DHA. From what I've read healthy young women can convert this more efficiently...

Re: Apo e4 as a neurotoxin.

Nice one, Doc. I Ike to understand what is causing our AD pathology. I like it even better when I can figure out how to take proactive steps to ameliorate the damage. This one got me thinking...how can we keep proteins from misfolding and creating toxic fragments in the first place? We need to figur...

Re: Fish Oil

Good review of how critical DHA is for our brains. Given the newer evidence, that E4s uptake less, seems even more important to ensure we have an adequate supply...
