Re: Questions re: statistics and testing accuracy
Hi Della. It is tough to make sense of all the data, isn't it? Here is a short answer to some of your questions. Scientists have to get used to some uncertainty. There is natural variation to consider. And always some variation caused by the instruments, analyses, and human error. Researchers try to...

Re: Teaching a class- need your input!
Hi. I'd add a brief mention of air quality, especially if you are in an area - like southern CA or the Northeast US. It might not help an individual later in life, but if we had better air quality there would be fewer cases in the future and a little less for our kids to worry about. See: http://www...

Re: Young Members & Taking A Slew of Supplements
Hi AoifeFae. You have youth on your side, which is huge. It's great that you are thinking this through carefully. I've heard several experts, including Dr. Bredesen, say that embarking on a prevention program without the tests - knowing what your status was and is now, isn't likely to help. You'll h...

Summary review of E4 - this seems like a good thing to read early
I've been reading a ton of papers recently, and I can't recall what I have and have not seen here. But if this one has not been mentioned I think it is worth a link. It is perhaps the best overall review of E4 I've seen. I like the language also, it's plain and easy to read even though it covers the...

Re: New GWAS design identifies 6 new AD genes!
Interesting. Looks like a pre-print of an interesting paper. I'm interested to learn more about the relative contributions or the genes they found, compared to those we know about. I'll have to get into the math of this paper and compare to some others. It would make it super-easy if "e4" ...

Re: Avoid Air Pollution
Interesting. I live in an area known for poor air quality...so I guess I'll just hold my breath.... A good basic place to start is the American Lung Association's State of the Air (2017) report, available online. Keep in mind that while PM2.5 is highly-dispersed levels are still significantly higher...

Re: Moderate coffee consumption may lower the risk of Alzheimer's disease by up to 20 percent
Here is one study concluding that it is the polyphenols in coffee, and not the caffeine, that is beneficial. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27479153. Not that I have anything against caffeine. But it suggests that decaf could be equally healthy. I suspect that the same goes for teas.

Re: New cause for "hardening of the arteries"?
Hi Julie. Interesting. This makes a lot of sense. We talk about this in class during "cholesterol week" (my favorite). The sugar industry really did a good job shifting the blame to fats in past decades - and many suffered for it IMO. But we often talk about this as a "knowledge is po...
