Is it useful to add cannabinoids yet?

Post by Kathleen1 »

I would be interested in hearing if there are emerging recommendations regarding use of CBD products in Apoe4 folks (either for atherosclerosis or brain issues) given their increasing availability in the marketplace in many states.

Kathleen1, I hope so ;). I just saw "It's Complicated" over the holidays (again) and my current life goal is to have as much fun as Meryl Streep's character. Romantic comedies are certainly NOT my husband's preferred genre, but he'll watch that one and laugh out loud with me anytime.

Has anyone had a positive or negative experience with cannaboids? I haven't tried it since college.

I’m a regular user.

Now before you jump to conclusions, remember there’s CBD and then there’s THC. I’m a CBD user, I get my legal anywhere “product” over the internet, just like anyone can.

As discussed in the above thread that I referred Kathleen to, I started this because of my foot pain and inflammation, a consequence of 3 surgeries on my right foot. I take a BioCBD+™ Total Body Care capsule https://www.biocbdplus.com/product/bioc ... ody-care-2 in the morning and a couple droppers full of the Charlotte’s Web Everyday Plus hemp oil tincture https://www.cwhemp.com/cannabinoid-hemp ... ryday-plus under the tongue just before going to bed every night. And I apply BioCBD Plus™ Muscle & Joint Relief Topical Oil https://www.biocbdplus.com/product/bioc ... opical-oil directly to my foot.

Any miracles? No.

Does it help? I think so.

I’ve been doing this regularly for about 6 months, I track my steps via fitness tracker and I am able to do more now than a year ago. Is this due to the CBD? . It’s hard to say because I’m employing a number of strategies to reclaim my foot/body.

Recreational marijuana is legal is Colorado, and for a while I was tried a high CBD/low THC transdermal cream on my foot. I didn’t notice any particular advantage of the THC with the CBD, nor was there any psychoactive effect whatsoever. So for my money, and worried that the neighbors might see my car briefly parked at the local marijuana dispensary :D I switched to CBD only content.

The worse case scenario? I’m wasting my money.

The best case scenario? Well, according to Ben Greenfield’s wonderful, albeit very long blog posting on CBD, https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/articl ... e-cbd-oil/ you can’t overdose on CBD and it’s not addictive. Therefore, at best, not only am I helping my poor hurting foot, but I’m doing a number of things that are beneficial for an ApoE4:
  • balancing hormones, specifically lowering cortisol
    lowering insulin levels
    reducing stress and anxiety
    reducing inflammation
    improving sleep
It's been a while since I've delved into this, but I vaguely remember something about there being genetic component on being CBD-1 or CBD-2 receptor dominant as to effectivity. Although the discussion centered around cancer, this podcast,
starting at about the 38 minute mark https://paleovalley.com/podcast/ep89-th ... ha-winters addresses the endocannabinoid system. At about 47:25 Dr Winters says, “THC dissolves the blood brain barrier…CBD on the other hand heals the blood brain barrier.” I found that very interesting but didn’t find any additional info on this. I asked about it in the above referenced thread, but received little in response besides this Endocannabinoids modulate human blood–brain barrier permeability in vitro https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4459020/

There’s also this on the endocannabinoid system https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endocannabinoid_system

I was using CBD oil for a short time. I found it relaxing but also maybe too relaxing (not productive enough) so I stopped. More recently I’ve been stressed out of my mind and it dawned on me to use it again. I think it’s helping, some, but probably need more.

I met a pharmacology professor who’s not a fan of its casual use, she said, because it has such widespread systemic effects. She seemed to be indicating that we don’t know enough yet.

Note for Potheads: See "Cannabinoid modulation of hippocampal long-term memory is mediated by mTOR signaling", Puighermanal 2009.
"Cognitive impairment is one of the most important negative consequences associated with cannabis consumption.
The CB1 cannabinoid receptor activation activates mTOR which interferes with the protein synthesis machinery in mouse hippocampus, which correlated with amnestic properties of THC.
This blocked by rapamycin.
Mice on rapamycin get high; but don't forget stuff.

Thanks alan, I was just reading a little about the receptors and how receptor 1 that THC activates triggers inflammation, while receptor 2 that cannabidiol oil activates is antiinflammatory. It’s interesting about mTOR and receptor 1. I’ve read that THC can cause brain developmental delays in adolescents (I hope I recall that right - I was skimming).

I think CBD oil has 2-4% or so of THC. When I described to Dr. Ackerley how I feel using CBD oil, she said some are sensitive to the small THC content. I do think I may one of those (let’s just say it’s reminiscent of days gone by), which is just fine with me when counterbalanced by much greater cannabidiol stimulation :D

I've dabbed with the Curcumin Nano-CBD extract from BioCBD+ (years back when it was on sale.) They market it as being low-dosed but highly bioavailable. It was pretty uneventful, maybe as anti-inflammatory or as noticeable as taking fish oil.

There is now a wiki article: Cannabinoids, Cannabidiol (CBD), THC, HEMP, Marijuana, Cannabis

https://www.apoe4.info/wiki/Cannabinoid ... ,_Cannabis
