The Distribution of Apolipoprotein E Gene Polymorphism and Apolipoprotein E Levels among Coronary Artery Patients Compared to Controls.

Here’s an interesting paper out of Turkey in which 200 subjects were APOE genotyped. Half were CAD patients; half were controls. APOE levels, LDL, HDL, TG, and BMI were analyzed. Interestingly, the CAD patients had lower APOE levels, lower LDL, lower HDL, similar TGs and a higher BMI compared to the controls. I quickly skimmed full-text and didn’t see any mention of the role that statins may have played. ApoE3 and ApoE4 carriers had similar APOE levels. Those with higher levels appear to have been protected against heart disease. Those with higher cholesterol and lower BMI were similarly protected. This appears to complement Rasmussen’s work in which higher peripheral APOE levels were correlated with improved cognition.
