the highly respected diabetes doctor richard k bernstein hypothesizes that damage to the pericytes is caused by high blood sugars:

dr bernstein's philosophy is that diabetics are entitled to normal blood sugars. his target is an a1c of 4.2-4.6. i have never been anywhere near that. my lowest a1c has been a 5.1. but i will try my best to get it to at least 5.0.

Thanks, this is interesting and described what to me is an entirely new mechanism explaining how high blood sugar contributes to dementia (no doubt in addition to other mechanisms).
