Did you know that studies have shown a lower risk for cancer in AD patients? and some cancer patients are less likely to develop AD?
e.g. https://www.medicinenet.com/script/main ... key=171240
"...people with Alzheimer's have nearly half the risk of getting cancer compared to the general population."
" having one disease seemed to have a considerable protective effect in terms of lowering the risk for the other."
I just thought this was interesting and thought I would share. I wonder if it has any relevance to APOE4. Would be nice to think we maybe have a lower cancer risk as some kind of potential benefit!

Re: Lower cancer risk in AD patients
Few more research articles in this here is anyone is interesting on reading more. Might be especially of interest to any readers who have had cancer or treatment I suppose.

It's interesting that chemo seemed to further decrease the risk for AD, I would have thought that would have the opposite affect given people can get 'chemo brain' or brain fog after treatment. very interesting

also that is seems to be a lowered risk with just some cancers and not others and there may be a small increased overall risk, Makes me wonder if some of the metabolic affects on cancer and AD might be at play there, as well.

Re: Lower cancer risk in AD patients
Even more interesting. Seems APOE4 might give a lower cancer risk according to this study. Seems to be mainly in men though.

On a related note Huntington's Disease gene provides an 80% lower risk of cancer. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2 ... 084458.htm
Perhaps the ability of APOE 4 to enter the nucleus and bind DNA reduces the risk or slows the progress of cancer. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2 ... 155753.htm
That or maybe it's the pro inflamation or amyloid componenent that reduces the risk of cancer as Alzheimer's regardless of APOE is correlated with a lower cancer risk? Maybe a study that did'nt properly adjust for confounding variables well enough? Maybe another correlation? Food for thought.

I wondered about the immune system response given that APOE4s are meant to be better at fighting off infections perhaps. If it might be better at fighting off cancer in the early stages. But if it is overactive might be a problem for things like AD.

Re: Lower cancer risk in AD patients, APOE4 carriers
Come to think of it, in my family have no one with cancer apart from one uncle in over 70s. Not any in maternal line. Wonder if similar for others with APOE4..

Ob,
Interesting!
A4/A3 here and no cancer in mother or father (died 80 and 85 respectively) or their numerous siblings. Maybe every cloud does have a silver lining!

Same here - no cancer on either side of the family.
