Question: Amyloid-beta vs beta-amyloid

Post by BrianR »

Am I correct in understanding that Amyloid-beta (Aß) is the peptide produced by our immune system and beta-amyloid is the plaque found in the brain which is associated with AD?

Good question. I don't know. I use AB, amyloid beta, AB42, etc. But maybe I'm wrong.

The words define the same entity. However there are beta-amyloids of different length so the one produced for immune purposes may not be exactly the same that is a part of plaques. Plaques may also have additional ingredients, and their beta-amyloid may have other properties due to the amount of it that collects in plaques, e.g. tertiary structure, polymers etc.
