Brainstormer wrote:Julie - thank you so much for posting these findings and to read all the related comments. My issue is that I'm allergic to all forms of fish so supplementing with cod liver oil isn't an option but I eat tons of veggies so hope I'm getting enough that way. All this has encouraged me to go back to my extrapolated 23&me results and dig into these snps a bit!
Welcome Brainstormer!
I love your "name" here on the site, it suggests that you are open to finding solutions and tweaking those solutions as you go, what a great and important mindset to have on this journey!

With regard to Vitamin A, liver from grass/pasture raised animals is a great source (quite possibly one of the best, and definitely NOT one of my favorite foods), also egg yolks are also a great source of retinoids that our body can use very efficiently, whereas the carotenoids found in veggies (dark leafy greens, carrots, swt potatoes, bell peppers...) need to go through a process in our body to reach the usable form retinoid or retinol. Vitamin D also plays a part in your body's use of Vitamin A. Both of these vitamins are fat soluble so eating them with a healthy fat (especially butter from grass fed cows) will increase their absorption. Personally I haven't paid a lot of attention to Vitamin A for cognitive health, no time like the present to begin!

Thanks Deb, I appreciate your reply and suggestions. Yep, time to start paying more attention to Vitamin A, and I'm with you, liver - not so much, but I've never met an egg yolk I didn't like and leafy greens have become a staple. I also appreciate your encouragement. I've read Stavia's magnum opus and feel grateful that her brain and heart are both in her writing!

Thanks for posting this. I checked my results with the Promethease report I have and I'm hitting about 50% on the good/bad converters. I've never been fully on the vegetarian diet, tho' at times I think I could. I do take cod liver oil during the long, cold winter days as I feel better.
