APOE4 protective against melanoma

Post by BrianR »

Mice expressing the human APOE4 allele exhibited reduced melanoma progression and metastasis relative to APOE2 mice. APOE4 mice exhibited enhanced anti-tumor immune activation relative to APOE2 mice, and T cell depletion experiments showed that the effect of APOE genotype on melanoma progression was mediated by altered anti-tumor immunity. Consistently, patients with melanoma carrying the APOE4 variant experienced improved survival in comparison to carriers of APOE2.

Hi BrianR,

I also saw this one:

then this one:

Inverse associations between cancer and AD were small and diminished over time. Incidence rates in cancer survivors approached those of the general population, suggesting limited association between cancer and AD risk.

Two related articles on the same day!

It's nice to think that there is a significant reduction in cancer-risk, or any benefit to apoe4. I mean, there's gotta be some good news occasionally, right? :)
