This bothers me. They show higher pain threshold is associated with E4, but they then make the leap to "this raises the prospect of using pain perception as a cheap, non-invasive way of detecting Alzheimer's before any symptoms occur". From my reading of this, what they are detecting is the ApoE4 allele. They might accurately say "this raises the prospect of using pain perception as a cheap non-invasive way of detecting a risk factor for Alzheimer's" but
equating the presence of the E4 allele with "early detection of Alzheimer's" doesn't work for me as a 3/4 with a high pain threshold, living my life in a way that has been shown to mitigate the increased risk of AD associated with the ApoE4 allele.
