Free Virtual Workshop: Methological Approaches for Whole Person Research

Post by circular »

Understanding the NCCIH's criteria for 'methodologies potentially appropriate for whole person research' might interest both researchers and those of us trying to develop critical thinking skills when evaluting published studies.

Methological Approaches for Whole Person Research
Workshop focused on methods needed for rigorous research on interconnected systems, multicomponent interventions, and multisystem outcomes.

About this event

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health’s new strategic plan defines whole person research as including three components:
  • Exploring the fundamental science of interconnected systems
Investigating multicomponent interventions or therapeutic systems
Examining the impact of these interventions on multisystem or multiorgan outcomes
The Whole Person Research Workshop will discuss examples of research studies in these three areas from diverse fields and explore methodologies potentially appropriate for whole person research.

The workshop will be led by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH). Workshop collaborators include the National Institute on Aging, National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, National Institute of Nursing Research, National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, Fogarty International Center, Office of Research on Women’s Health, Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research, Office of Disease Prevention, and the Office of Nutrition Research within the National Institutes of Health Office of the Director.

Moving the Complementary and Integrative Health Research Field Toward Whole Person Health, 2021 commentary by Helene M. Langevin, MD, Director of the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) within NIH.
At NCCIH, we have folded the concept of whole person health into our new strategic plan,* which will serve to guide NCCIH’s research endeavors for the coming 5 years.

*NCCIH Strategic Plan FY 2021–2025: Mapping a Pathway to Research on Whole Person Health (https://www.nccih .nih.gov/about/nccih-strategic-plan-2021-2025)...

We do not know whether salutogenesis [health restoration] consists of ‘‘pathogenesis in reverse,’’ or whether specific salutogenic mechanisms need to be acti- vated for health to be restored...

We know that living organisms are organized into multiscale interdependent networks that not only can self-organize, but also have the potential to evolve and ‘‘grow’’ through the emergence of patterns of higher complexity in response to challenges. This can happen from the ‘‘bottom-up’’— immune responses, epigenetic changes, or microbiome adaptations—or the ‘‘top-down’’—changes in behavior or societal changes. It is important to point out that whole person research is not simply studying all the components of the whole person, but also exploring connections be- tween these components such as ‘‘balance’’ and ‘‘adapt- ability’’ that relate to complex system behaviors…

In fact, whole person health has already taken root across NIH, and NCCIH has been proud to lead and collaborate on research initiatives such as Bridge to Artificial Intelligence,{ Sound Health,{ the Health Care Systems Research Colla- boratory,x and others. Each of these projects involves In- stitutes and Centers across NIH and reflects the growing recognition that an integrative mindset has the potential to have a transformative impact on research. [Encouraging emphasis added]

This workshop is just now kicking off with introductory remarks and will continue all day today and tomorrow. I don't know whether a recording will be available. The program can be viewed in detail here. Here is the link to today's workshop, and here's the link to tomorrow's workshop.
