New APOE4 20 minute video Dr. Paul Mason Reversing dementia with diet: a 2021 update

Post by DaleBru »

I'm a fan of Dr. Paul Mason (Australia). I think I remember that he is APOE3/4, as I am. Two days ago he dropped a succinct 20 minute video entitled "Reversing dementia with diet: a 2021 update." I think he did a wonderful job, and the video is replete with references that are up to date and relevant.

I see so many people posting on this forum who are doing exactly the wrong thing to help their current or future dementia, in my opinion. And you might feel that way about me. I understand, and this is really hard. Experts do disagree. But the stakes are so extremely high for me and for my loved ones that I feel compelled to continue to consider evidence that I previously discounted. I hope and pray that you will also.

I don't often post, but I do greatly appreciate those who do and are more active. This is a very valuable community.

I’ve been familiar with Dr Paul Mason for years now after first hearing him speak at one of the Low Carb conferences I attended. I have great respect for him, have listened to some other of his presentations on the internet, and the advice he gives always seems to be well researched.

This is a nice video, he revisits some themes we’ve emphasized for years, and states some issues I personally disagree with.

My hesitations with Dr Mason lie in that I know his leanings follow his personal dietary practice as a carnivore and while his breadth of knowledge is indisputable, it's his depth of knowledge in sciences applicable to the brain/neurodegenerative diseases, because that is not his area of expertise. This is why I tend to put more emphasis on guidance from Dr Bredesen, Dr Terry Wahls, Dr Nick Norwitz, Dr David Purlmutter, Dr Hussein Yassine, Dr Dayan Goodenowe, etc.

Mini-bio on Dr Mason:
“Dr Paul Mason obtained his medical degree with honours from the University of Sydney, and also holds degrees in Physiotherapy and Occupational Health. He is a Specialist Sports Medicine and Exercise Physician. Dr Mason developed an interest in low carbohydrate diets in 2011. Since then he has spent hundreds of hours reading and analysing the scientific literature. For the last two years, Dr. Mason has been applying this knowledge in treating metabolic and arthritis patients who have achieved dramatic and sustained weight loss and reductions in joint pain.”

But thanks for sharing an interesting video.

This video has not been going over well on the Official Bredesen Protocol Facebook page. This was a comment by one of the followers regarding Dr Paul Mason and this video:
He has become a carnivore fanatic. He used to be interesting and he still is, but this video is MISLEADING for us in high risk of dementia. I shut it down not when he suggested that apoe4 carriers get AD only when they are high in insulin resistance, this is a usual bul... carnivore keto followers are claiming. But when he said that EVOO has been proven as not beneficial as the SFs. At this moment I wrapped it up. (I watched his latest 2020 conference and wondered what a Ms Nobody with no scientific knowledge is doing there explaining us that our ancestors ate only meat, when we all know that they ate around 600 foods including roots, vegetables, seeds, nuts and everything an omnivore eats. I was very sceptical to see such fanatic in his Conference Low Carb Down Under 2020)

Thanks for sharing, Theresa. This talk is a perfect example of good science mixed with cherry-picked science. I think we all agree that avoiding insulin resistance is protective but the subsequent leap to carnivorism lacks evidence. Mason contradicts himself with the reference to the Indianapolis vs. African E4 comparison study. Per the NYT's summary the African E4 carriers who avoided AD did NOT eat a carnivorous diet. In fact, their diet was comprised primarily of vegetables. This example is not unlike the modern E4 Tsimane from Bolivia who also avoid typical E4 pathology with a high fiber diet rich in vegetables, with some fish, and lean meats.
The Ibadan residents in the study were traders at small markets. They are extremely poor, unable to afford much more than vegetables to eat, Dr. Hendrie said, with a diet consisting of things like yams, cassava and palm oil with sometimes a sprinkling of fish. The study participants in Indianapolis were typical Americans, with the typical American diet.
Key protective contributors for E4 appear to be a primitive lifestyle, living in sync with circadians, lots of exercise, a clean, whole foods diet, and maintaining insulin sensitivity. That said, I think a carnivore diet (in some form) can be transitionally helpful for those with severe GI and autoimmune issues.

Instead of following the science and concluding natural courses of action from what the science unfolded, as Dr Bredesen did in his years as a neurodegenerative disease researcher, Dr Mason is using his personal choice as a carnivore and, as you said, cherry-picking from research to find tidbits of information that sound reasonable. They are supporting his personal path, but it’s sad that he’s using his title of doctor (which has nothing to do with brain science) to sound authoritative. How many folks is he sending in the wrong direction? It makes my heart sink. Over the years I’ve learned that just because someone has “Doctor” in front of their name and can spell “ApoE” doesn’t mean they know what they talk about. So glad we have this website to separate the wheat from the chaff (sorry to use a gluten laden analogy).

I used to respect Dr Mason, but he’s jumped the shark, no longer.

I know I am late to the topic and I am certainly no expert. However I do live in the Caribbean where there is a large black population and whose ancestors came from mainly West Africa. My grandparents ate ground provision, vegetable fish..meat was a luxury. Their grandchildren now snub their nose "at that kind of food" and are quite proud to say they eat a Western diet and are paying a steep price for it in more ways than one.

Hi lihalee, Welcome to the site! Just a quick tip: when you are replying to someone, as you did to Cindy, if you want to be sure that person sees it, it is best to use the quotation marks. In the post you are replying to, you click on the quotation marks just to the left of the name of the person who posted. that way, the person you are replying to will get an email notification. Otherwise, it is just luck whether someone checks back and sees your response.
