Prenatal Folate - later brain issues??

Post by Jennie »

Can anyone help me locate the section where I believe Dr Bredesen discusses the idea that high folate levels in modern prenatal vitamins could be responsible for later mental health problems in children with certain (MTHFR) mutations?

I don't know what Bredesen's view is on folate in the context of pregnancy, but to prevent birth defects, the time to take high folate is while trying to conceive, and even before actively trying. Ideally start taking folate while still on birth control. The reason for that is because the birth defects that are preventable by folate - ie neural tube closure defects - are events that happen during the early weeks of pregnancy. So the idea is to create a high level of stored folic acid in the liver, that can then be released through the placenta as needed.
