So....more drama on our epic month long trip around north america. Hubby gets what seems like flu. Day three getting worse. Starts coughing. I chuck some erythromycin at him which works perfectly well in my country. Day 5 worse and has generalised petechial/ vesicular rash. I diagnose mycoplasma pneumonia ie community aquired pneumonia. Get physician friend to visit who concurs and there are indeed bilateral lung crackles. She changes him to azithromycin. Gets worse. Last night day 6 very ill. Toxic confused hypoxic tachycardic rigors etc. Off to hospital here in Vancouver who confirm yes it is indeed mycoplasma with bilateral pneumonia but in North America azithromycin often doesnt work anymore. He is now on moxifloxacin. Wtf. Wtf. In my country we only use moxifloxacin in ICU. 4th generation quinolone. Wow. Even azithromycin use is highly highly restricted by our system. Only stat dose for chlamydia and 5 days for pertussis in under 2 yrs old. Apparently here everyone gets it for minor respiratory illnesses.
.....off to buy probiotics. This is gonna wipe his gut biome out completely. Scorched earth.
Antibiotic resistance
Re: Antibiotic resistance
Absolutely terrifying. I'm so sorry (((Stavia.))) I'm sending good energy for his complete recovery. And, PLEASE, take care of yourself while nursing him.

I had a cold with sore throat and the lozenges just one stopped it!! It came back after a day and tried it again and it worked. that was in November.. I have been using the whole formula and I'm fine. me partner just came back from 3 weeks in mexico with ear infection was so blocked could only hear unless I screamed, lungs thick with mucus, snoring and coughing etc.. did not have anything when away and is now trying to recover on antibiotics. I have heard from others who also say it works.
the latest is 50mg zinc but it is worth joining lef.org for the latest stuff.

Thanks Gene. Unfortunately a bit beyond that. He woulda died without the moxiflox. He's septicaemic.
I am in Canada with no access to anything bar what is in the central city shops so had to get what the London Drugs had.

Stavia, yikes! Scary! I echo Julie: take care of yourself as well as your hubby!
It will smell but there's some evidence that garlic can help -- mostly preventatively -- with most types of infections. It's small potatoes compared with real drugs, but it might improve the odds a little.
Un abrazo muy fuerte!

Thanks G. Been a nightmare. The thing is that I actually diagnosed it all accurately with no access to diagnostics or even a stethoscope (Laennac style used rolled up paper and percussion ) but I doubted myself and was terrified I'd put him in danger and he'd die. The specialist said I had done everything she would have done even if she'd have had tests but I was just so so scared I'd made the wrong decisions. This is why you don't treat family but he refused to go to a doctor earlier

(((Stavia)))
So sorry it happened on your trip. How frightening! Sending prayers for a speedy recovery.

Re: Antibiotic resistance
Stavia, as one with a history of toxic shock and an atypical mycobacterium from dog bite, don't blame your self. Usually an infection has to become fulminant to be fully addressed.
I don't know how we can help, but let us know. I just can't imagine having these infections while traveling, even when I was several decades younger.

Thanks Susan and Kitano. The rigors have stopped and he is afebrile finally. Lfts deranged a little so I have banned the herbal stuffs his brother has given him. Im forcing him to eat protein cos his albumin is 29 and I can see he is catabolising muscle. He is refusing ensure. I stood over him like he was a child and forced him to have 150grams salmon. I dont care if he doesnt have an appetite. Sigh
