Diet pre colonoscopy

Biting the bullet and having a screening colonoscopy next week.
The diet they want me 48 hrs before on is awful. They are not interested in modifying it for me. And I'm not changing clinics, I've got the best scope-ist in my city lined up and an anaethetist cos of my complicated allergies.
My options are
1. Ignore them and possibly have a compromised procedure
2. Fast and just drink water. I can fast 28 hrs no problem, guess another day won't be the end of the world.
3. Eat a minimum of the stuff on the list. I guess I could do steamed chicken breast, olive oil for calories and cooked cooled and reheated white potatoes. I hate rice.
4. Eat white bread for 2 days and just enjoy the break from our strict lifestyle. I'm tempted.

Suggestions?

Good for you, Stavia. I think I'm a year or so late...on purpose ;). I briefly touched on this in another thread about preparing for surgery. Maybe you can pull some ideas out from my approach:
-Another major pitfall for me was avoiding sugar. I'm convinced that glycemic control is imperative for E4s in preventing AD/CVD and in reducing general inflammation. Seems to me that this would be MORE important, not less important, in preparation for surgery. I've worked very hard to maintain low blood glucose that rarely spikes. I was asked to do a bowel prep, in conjunction with a clear diet, the day before surgery. A clear diet is supposed to provide around 1500 calories of mainly simple sugar: jello, fruit juices, Popsicles, etc. NONE of which I choose to eat. I had the option of fasting, but I knew I would also be denied food the day of the surgery. I opted to sip organic broths. Once cooled, I got calories by adding EVOO. Ingenuity is the mother of invention ;) This technique is non-physician approved...but got the job done. I had to drink several bottles of magnesium citrate. Sucrose/sugar is a major ingredient. I found alternatives that used saccharine- meh, but avoided the BG spike.

Yah I remember well, but I don't get sugar spikes or dips. You certainly cannot afford to have such events.
I'm really tempted to take the opportunity for 2 days off my diet. I don't think it'll break me.

I always remember my friend who had part of her colon removed being told by her doctor that chicken is the most difficult meat to digest.

The last time I did one, I just fasted. As an afibber where any electrolyte disturbance is a potential trigger, that was my biggest concern. I found a product, Golytely, for clean out which is theoretically electrolyte sparing. I was able to have the procedure without afib issues.

I had the colonoscopy last year to celebrate my 50th. It was while I was still doing a 60%+ fat diet and found fasting relatively easy, so I just did not each much during the prep-diet period.

FWIW, I was worried about what the procedure would do to my gut flora. Within a day, my bathroom "habits" were back to normal.

That appears to be a stricter prep than what my husband was given? If I recall right his prep began 12 hours before the morning procedure. That point there was no food and the Miralax was prescribed. However, his friends, including a former ER doc/heart surgeon/dermatolosit said use the gatorade instead. There are websites that describe this and I pulled one up (long lost) that was through a gastroenterologist. I wonder if sugar free gatorade would work to keep the electrolytes up but not the sugar?

Ive been trawling the internaut looking at protocols. There appears to be little concordance.
I've decided that today, 2 days before, will be chicken and cornflakes. Tomorrow I will fast.
Ate white bread yesterday and have just woken up with splitting headache. Wasnt a good idea.

Good luck Stavia! You're brave and I'm sure will come through with flying colors :-) I'm still avoiding it because it will wreck my back (broken) and hips (bursitis) and just try to keep my risk factors very low. I should at least pursue one of the other options. Here's a layperson's overview https://www.healthline.com/health-news/ ... r-032015#6 Thanks for the prompt … adding to my dr. apt for tomorrow :-)

Cornflakes??? A distant memory. Enjoy. Hope they agree with you better than the bread. Best of luck with the whole procedure. XO
