I have seen where Dr.s have prescribed 10000 units of vitamin d3 for a short period of time. I would not take that much without a Dr. Prescription. I believe that is normally done in high dose for people way under 20. I found with myself 1000 increments increased mine by 6 points, maybe 7. I would also take vitamin k2 or mk 7 with the vitamin d3. Not knowing your response or how you will respond taking 10000 units a day may be wrong as it may rise too fast to too high. MS patients and people with menstrual cramps have been prescribed by doctors 250,000, for MS and 500000 for menstrual cramps( pretty sure it was 500000?, it has been a couple of years since I read the articles) You can find the articles on line. I personally would not take mega doses unless under Dr. Orders and reason explained. Some people do not absorb d3 well thru intestines/colon and higher doses are required.

Ah, ok. You guys have your own lingo with short-hands from talking about this stuff so long. :) Most of them I just google, but I couldn't find that one, heh.

My doctor said that if I took a statin I "wouldn't need to worry about it anymore", and I told him I wanted to see if I could solve the problem with diet & exercise. I have FH of CVD and Alzheimer's, but in grandparents/aunts/uncles but not dad/mom/siblings.

I had a huge battle with allergies and breaking out in hives everyday, then after lots of allergy testing and experimenting with elimination diets and working on my gut health, all my allergies are gone. I could have just loaded up on antihistamine shots, but I'm really glad I didn't. In the process, I realized just how dramatic of an effect our food has on our overall health.

Now I feel like if my body is trying to tell me something and I take medication, I'm just ignoring the underlying problem. I'm not opposed to it, but if I can find a way to heal myself with food and lifestyle changes, I'm more likely to be actually solving the problem. Seems like I should at least try.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback.

I eat tons of kale... looks like that's k1 though. Looks like k2 is in meat that I'm not eating. Not in any of my existing vitamins either. I found one study that says our body makes k2 from k1, another says you have to eat natto... which ain't happening.

Good for you, Janelle! I totally agree diet & exercise are preferable to meds. It sounds like you've already sorted out a lot with the allergy symptoms. FWIW, many of us struggle with weird allergies/sensitivities. Once I stopped eating all grains & only whole foods; mine essentially disappeared.

Yay on the glucose meter. More and more research is suggesting that insulin resistance GREATLY predisposes E4 carriers to both AD & CVD. Here's two great links from Chris Kresser that will help you understand the difference between "normal" blood sugar & "optimal" blood sugar. Kresser also discusses target FBG and PPBG:
http://chriskresser.com/when-your-norma ... mal-part-1
http://chriskresser.com/when-your-“norm ... mal-part-2

My son was very deficient in Vitamin D and his physician prescribed a crazy high dose for a short period to get him within the reference range. I'm sorry, but I don't recall the exact dosage :? His physician put him on the protocol and retested once completed. Maybe ask your doc his/her recommendations for getting back in range the safest way.

I know you're making lots of changes all at once...but WA has an excellent point about the K vitamins. Vitamins D, A & K all work in concert with one another and are all fat soluble. You have the best chance of absorbing & properly utilizing the D if you are careful to ensure you're getting adequate amounts of the others. I take my vitamin D3 with this blend of Vitamin K (http://www.lef.org/vitamins-supplements ... k2-complex) some dietary fat, and an organic carrot ;)

Keep us posted on your progress. I wish I had started seriously working on my health at your age. You're perfectly poised to avoid AD & CVD.

Janelle, I would like to underscore the recommendation to consume D3 with A, K2, and healthy fat. I would also like to suggest zinc and magnesium. To understand why and thereby accord this prescription the importance I think it deserves, I suggest that you read Chris Masterjohn, whose original research I believe to be the source of everyone else's recommendations along these lines. Chris has a PhD in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Connecticut, did a post-doc at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), and just started a new position as a tenure-track assistant professor at Brooklyn College, which is part of the City University of New York (CUNY).

If you want a fuller description, check out these links:

http://www.cholesterol-and-health.com/a ... ealth.html
http://blog.cholesterol-and-health.com/ ... rjohn.html

And if you want a candid personal story explaining why he chose to become a nutrition scientist:

http://www.cholesterol-and-health.com/V ... anism.html

Here is his description of the interactions among certain vitamins (A, D, and K2), minerals (zinc and magnesium), dietary fats, and metabolic factors (thyroid hormone, carbon dioxide):

http://www.westonaprice.org/health-topi ... -vitamins/

It's a compelling story that required years of research. The details are important and actionable, and the big picture story of biochemical complexity makes the case that dietary supplements do not obviate our need for nutrient-dense whole foods. Just as judicious supplements ensure that we get enough of known essentials given soil depletion and other modern environmental losses, so nutrient-dense whole foods help us get whatever we need that we don't fully understand and/or are unable to manufacture perfectly.

And here is his fascinating series on Weston Price's scientific approach, which makes the same case for consuming nutrient-dense whole foods through the lens of dental anthropology:

http://www.westonaprice.org/blogs/cmast ... nd-wisdom/
http://www.westonaprice.org/blogs/cmast ... n-context/

He has written much more that I find to be of interest - if you like these items, I think you'll find additional googling to be rewarding.

At a personal level, my review of these and other papers by Masterjohn prompted me to

- Supplement vitamin A, just in case I'm not getting enough from meat, eggs, cheese, and vegetable beta-carotene conversion. I use a WAPF-recommended cod liver oil (http://www.westonaprice.org/health-topi ... endations/) from Swanson: http://www.swansonvitamins.com/swanson- ... -500-sgels. I take four daily, with food, 12 cents.

I also continued these supplements:

- Magnesium (http://www.swansonvitamins.com/swanson- ... g-180-caps), four daily, 19 cents.

- Zinc (http://www.swansonvitamins.com/swanson- ... g-180-caps), three per week for a per-day expense of 1 cent.

- Vitamins K1 and both forms of K2 (http://www.swansonvitamins.com/life-ext ... x-90-sgels) once daily, with food, 25 cents.

- Vitamin D-3 (http://www.swansonvitamins.com/swanson- ... l-60-sgels) once daily, with food, 8 cents.

Finally, my interest in consuming traditionally produced foods continues to grow. Recently I have begun making sauerkraut, which is an easy and fun natural source of K2 and probiotics.

Thank you guys so much for all the helpful links! I've got a lot of reading to do.

I've become quite fond of raw sauerkraut, but have been buying it as opposed to making it. That was my secret ingredient to curing my allergies. ;) It looks like the amount of K2 content in the fermentation will depend a lot on the starter culture. Merouleau, do you use a starter at home or just do wild fermentation?

I could totally get into fermenting veggies at home I think.

Meroleou, Janelle and Juliegee are all working on enzyme therapy, but there is more to that.
I also like that Meroleou is showing the low cost of his vitamin regimen and they all are important to not be deficient in, however over supplementation can cause over absorbtion problems as well. Particularly vitamin a as it has been shown to promote cancer metastasis and depletion of vitamin D3 under over absorbtion. If you deplete the amount of vitamin d 3 in the cell then the tp53 anti cancer gene killer will not turn on and angiogenesis will occur. If you don't take sufficient vitamin k2 the vitamin d3 will not be directed to the bone and can instead calcify in the veins creating artherosclerosis. Zinc is necessary for mmp or matrix metalloproteinase proper regulation as well as the zinc immune system, which can all be screwed by over absorbtion of copper in regards to copper reduces zinc in the body. Then there is magnesium's good qualities as well as what it can do wrong.
The key is proper testing as it determines what is happening in your body not what is happening in some other n=1 body that requires different diets and supplementation due to the different genetics, conditions or diseases in each n=1 body.
Many Doctors will say diet and exercise but they do not explain in the detail that we attempt to explain here and have been shown to work in many people on this site from self reporting on this web site just as you have Janelle. The key is learning what you need and in this case you have and desire more knowledge that may improve your n=1 situation due to the positive feedback of your scientific experimentation on your n=1 body.
As George once asked Stavia about a person, how compliant is she? As you see compliant is one of the greatest and probably the greatest obstacle of positive change in your quest for a better health outcome for your n=1 body results.
And of course there is more.

The key to Masterjohn is he has the nutritional science background, most MD's refer you to nutritionists for diet issues and do not explain them. He gets his material that he speaks about from clinical trial data that we read or at least that I read as his words or word use is seen on the pages that I read. I have not followed his many speeches as I spend my time with the source material doing self analysis as I like the challenge of deciphering the indecipherable thru massive reading and thinking. That is probably because I have moved past the Mom command days of eat what is on your plate and then you can go out and play. Now the play is understanding what is on my plate. Wait what was that you said, Don't play with your food, eat it or I will throw it out, geesh mannish can't a child scientist catch a break, what did you say Mom, don't throw your food, I am just analyzing its viscosity and it's nutrient density by the thump sound it makes when it hits the wall. And then there is more.

Ps Mom do not get in a huff when I drop food on the floors as I am working on the theory of gravity and physics with the limited scientific instruments given me. What else can I do with my time in this limited life form at this time.

And there is more
Vitamin d3 is depleted by vitamin a as told, but what else depletes it? And are you doing those things and how much depletion are you causing? Are your actions causing an equal and opposite reaction in regards to vitamin d3?
