I want to thank those of you who started this website and those of you who share your stories and information. I found you through 23andme/Promethease after discovering my Apoe 3/4 and MTHFR gene status. I've been reading and rereading the information for about 2 months. It has been extremely helpful. I am 63 years old, female, and have been following Dr. Joel Fuhrman (plant-based) since 2013. My first question: I am having a hard time moving away from Dr. Fuhrman's plant-based, no/low oil, eating beans to Dr. Gundy's recommendations for EVOO, no beans, less fruit, consuming some animal products. Can anyone direct me to a diet discussion that may help? 2nd question: I've emailed DrBredesen.com about finding a physician twice. I've received nice replies saying that they do not have their list of Bredesen Protocol practitioners yet. Do any of you know of a practitioner near upstate South Carolina?

Hello, and welcome, Diane! So glad you found this forum. Your questions are good ones. I don't have the answers but others on here will. I just wanted to welcome you. I've been on here for about a year now, when I found out about my status. One thing I can say regarding your diet question, I ate similar to you most of my life and found as I got older, it caused me to gain weight, which led to other health problems. But others don't necessarily respond that way. I was just curious as to whether you were finding that, also. After switching to the protocol on here (a combination of Stavia's primer, Bredesen protocol, and Gundry's), I've lost 20 pounds. I feel great, no more high blood pressure, and my cholesterol improved a lot without meds. I do exercise more regularly now, too.

Hi DianeSC, Welcome to our website! My name is Sara and I am an apoe4 intern. You are certainly on the right path with diet and I will see if I can find you some additional resources to support your changes. In the meantime I know that their are a few providers on the Institute for Functional Medicine who list credentials for the Bredesen Protocol. Go to ifm.com and select Find A Practitioner and then check the listing of providers for your location. This is not an all inclusive list but I did notice some providers are starting to list this credential under their training! Another possibility might be to just look through the same list of providers on the ifm.com website for your location and see if one stands out. That is what I did and found an internist in upstate NY who was willing to help although she did not have the 'Bredesen Protocol' credential she was very helpful in providing guidance and oversight in regard to testing, diet, supplements, exercise and meditation practices. In the meantime I will see what I can find for you regarding diet. Again, welcome to our community! I will get back to you shortly with some additional information. Sara

Welcome Diane
Yes this forum is amazing!!!!
In your readings, did you have a chance to look at the 'primer' from Stavia? ( from Welcome you will find a link to primer)
By searching diet in this specific section, you'll find a lot of valuable info.

What you can do as well is looking at the 'Institute of Functional Medicine' and 'Find a practitioner' near your home.
https://ifm.org/functional-medicine/

Functional medicine doctors are looking at the root causes and they have wonderful nutrition plans and they are taking the time needed with a patient. They work with you on your lifestyle: sleep, stress management, exercise, diet, relationships, etc...The Mito plan is a real good one to create ketones in your body and help mitochondria functions. Another help if you wish to have an ally/supporter is to have a health coach. Talking with a health coach trained in Functional Medicine is a asset to help you outside the doctor's office - . And you can ask to have one from the support team.

Hi Diane, The Primer as referenced by jolicoeur... contains valuable information about a healthy diet. Here is the link in case you have trouble finding it. (viewtopic.php?f=33&t=1418) You can scroll down to the section on diet. Also, Dr. Perlmutter has a couple of excellent books about diets that are beneficial for the brain. I read Grain Brain and would highly recommend it. It was one of the first stepping stones on my journey to better brain health and if I recall he has alternative recipes for Best, Sara

Welcome, Diane! The IFM practitioner search has changed. We used to be able to type the word "cognition" in the search engine to identify practitioners who'd been trained in Dr. Bredesen's approach. I see that option has disappeared. :? I just reached out to Dr. Bredesen's company on your behalf to see if they can provide me with up-to-date information on practitioner in your area. Stay tuned. I'll share any response with you.

I join in the welcome to active posting! Good for you, I can tell you are carefully and seriously planning your best path forward. As I'm sure you have already seen, the members of this site are tremendous in sharing information and answering questions. Also, you probably know that there are several FMCA (Functional Medicine Coaching Academy) interns (of which I am one), who have studied lifestyle changes (in addition to nutrition), who stand ready to help in any way we can. (We are all students, doing our Practicum, but many have specialized talents that could be helpful. Just ask, if any issues at all come up.). Concerning nutrition, I am familiar with Dr Furhman. I would be interested to know a little bit more information about your total day to day diet - if you would like to share.

Hi DianeSC, Welcome! Like you I am ApoE 3/4 and also have variations in MTHFR gene. The switch in recommended diets from low fat to to one that is rich in healthy fats can be confusing. Having gone recently to a few workshops on brain health that included talks on the rationale for a diet higher in fat, I have found the information compelling enough that I have begun to eat a diet much higher in fat and lower in carbs than before. If you have not found it yet, you might find this Forum, "Diet Help. Please post what is working for you" interesting. You can either look in the Forums list for that topic, or use this link:
