Recently I started taking 740 mg of bulk Amla powder purchased from Amazon based on this study. (The study used only 500 mg, but it turns out that a single packed OO capsule holds 740 mg of the powder I bought. I figured the 50% discrepancy would not be a big deal, so I went with it.)

Five OO capsules will fit in a teaspoon, so your four teaspoons are approximately 15 g or 30 times the amount used in the study.

An "amla dosage" search turns up recommendations like these:

1.9 - 3.7 g
450 mg - 3 g
1 - 2 g

So based on what I have learned, I'm probably being too conservative and should consider upping the dosage. From my brief research, half a teaspoon twice daily seems like a reasonable upper limit to set.

So, all of this brings me to my question, Janpeter. How did you settle on four teaspoons? Is there a study or other reference that you recommend?

...of what ?? is that fiber or RS or whatever you are referring to?
I was referring to fiber. Per my chron-o-meter, I average about 25 grams a day. How about you?

Totally misleading and not what I was discussing and it just adds to the confusion of this issue and have to say unfortunately it does not add to the debate.

Russ I believe jicama is high in RS and my point is all non digestible fiber is part of the RS domain as quoted in the study. Ancestral diets contained high amounts of RS due to the higher fiber content and 25g which JG mentions as fiber would only have a small amount of RS so this is a misreading of DrP or my posts which seems unfortunate coming from one person who needs to be more exact in wording when they keep trying to use quotes against someone. cyber bullying that is!!
still needs a retraction as I can't waste time with this non sense here which will drive away other good people and as I said confuse others. probably typical of DrP blind followers drinking his cool-aid.

www.heartlifetalk.com where this kind of non sense is held to check by moderators and violators warned or banned.

My Spunky Friend, I promise you are seeing aggression where none was intended.
RS seems to load the bowels at least me with a lot of fluid and was having 2 bathroom appointments a day but I think it increased my energy levels quite a bit and my sustainable dose was 3tbsp/day but I then tried different sources of RS but stopped everything and just continue to consume a high vegetable diet with one vegetarian source meal a day to reduce my fat load so I can slightly increase fat at other meals.
I was trying to offer support for stopping the potato starch and instead eating a diet high in vegetables; IMO a healthier choice.

Hi merouleau and Janpeter!
Reading with interest about Amla. I have seen discussion about it here in past. Especially liked the research comparing it head-on with simvastatin. Janpeter have you had any side effects with 4 tsps per day? And have you seen it lower either TC and or LDL? Since you just started, merouleau how long are your trying it before seeing what it does to your lipids? I think I will give it a go myself, after home from vacation. After I stabilize my diet for a week or so.

Trying to do this diet while on vacation...is interesting. Bought a bottle of EVOO to add to eggs at restaurant and eating lots of salad. It was hard to even find a bottle of 100 % cold filtered EVOO where I shopped.
Ordered one veggie omelet at restaurant that tasted like Bisquick. I asked them what they put in it. Server came back with piece of card board torn off box. The "eggs" were 20 ingredients long including dehydrated egg whites and partially hydrogenated oil. I sent it back and ordered something else. Yuck.

Thanks,
Sandra z

Do you know that the form of Amla is the same though? So does your 750mg equate to the 500mg they used?
I read all over about the high content of Vit C in Amla but have yet to see anywhere that lists how much Vit C is contained in lets say 500mg of Amla.

I have made a number of changes since my disconcerting mid-March lipid test, so I won't be able to isolate amla's effects. I intend to test sometime in August.

After a third close reading of the article, I still think they're using powdered Indian gooseberry, which is what I bought.

You and I have the same facts - the article text and the Amazon product description - perhaps you can connect the dots for me on an alternative interpretation?

Oh Sandra, I've had those restaurant omlettes spiked with pancake batter- bleh  What an odd idea. I also travel with a small bottle of EVOO in my purse. Great way to safely enjoy a salad on the road.

For those using the Amla, are you a bit nervous, considering we don't understand the mechanism behind it's action? I've read the paper and it sounds like a nothing short of a miracle, but I remain a bit skeptical. My guess is that using a small dose might be a good idea while gauging effect...especially considering the cognitive dysfunction some E4 carriers have experienced on other statin lowering supplements and medications

Does anyone using it feel any differently? Any cognitive impact? Or, any effect on overall energy? Careful, friends...

Hi Julie,
Yes I was wondering how Amla lowers cholesterol. Haven't seen anything that explains mechanism although I have looked around a bit. My fear would be that it lowers LDLc, but keeps LDLp the same or even raises LDLp like I have read can happen with statins for some people. Especially if works in a similar way to statins. Maybe only way to know, at least that part, is to do an NMR after taking for a bit. But yes, the unknown bothers me a bit. The positive is it has been around for a long time. But that still doesn't mean there may not be problems. :?
