Newcomer here

Post by BGTex »

Hello!

I signed up a while back but bumbled on elsewhere around the internet before finding my way back here. I'm a 53 year old male, 3/4. I am extremely interested in all of this for obvious reasons. I've read the primer, lurked quite a bit. I know many of your names and many of your posts/threads. I've read Dr. Bredesen's book and probably several more book on the topic, and I've listened to every podcast that has hosted any of the experts/gurus on this subject matter.

I'm not terribly scientific in my approach to all of this or my knowledge. Broad brushstrokes of knowledge in mostly general terms, though I've been very interested in health and nutrition for decades. Every now and again, I have some quantifying information that I've retained, or I've dabbled in some protocol or other that relates to this (for example, I've done 7 rounds of Dr. Longo's fasting mimicking diet).

I've been pretty fit all of my life and I'm the same height/weight as I've always been, since I was 15. I'm 5'10.5" and 180-ish, give or take 5 pounds at any given time. My adult job, my entire adult life, I've been a lawyer. In my prior life, I was a professional boxer. I had 7 pro fights and over 100 amateur fights. Additionally, I had thousands of rounds of very hard sparring. In other words, I engaged in probably the most ridiculously idiotic endeavor that a person interested in preserving his brain health could engage in. I regret it mightily, but there's nothing to do about it now.

I have always exercised hard and always eaten (mostly) well. I have no reason to think that I'm diminished in any way, but dementia definitely runs in the family.

The reason I came back by here is because I'm ready to get more serious about my diet, and googling "apoe4 keto" led me back this way. That's what I intend to do... a keto diet. The one suggested by Dr. Bredesen. Anyway, that's how I came back here and now I hope to jump in and learn, as well as contribute in any way that I can.

Welcome, BGTex!
So first let me say that anyone being a lawyer and being a former boxer have probably resulted in using multiple areas of your brain really well! If you spent a lot of time unconscious, maybe not so great, but having the flexibility to function in the ring and make split second decisions probably means that you have connections and synchronicity in brain areas that those of use who learned how to ride a bike at age 7 (hand raised) can't begin to imagine. And more importantly, the past is the past, and you're goal is to plan out the next 40 years of your life, not worry over the last 40. Your eclectic approach to this site and other sources, and your mention of Pater Attia's The Drive on another post suggest that you're skilled at synthesizing large amounts of disparate information (something that helps in your profession) and that you can chart your own path with adjustments as you go.

So I will only offer a few quick tips for this forum: "How-To" Get the most out of the ApoE4.info website will save you time on using searches, quoting others to make sure they see your post, subscribing to topics of interest and saving drafts (always save drafts if you might get called away!)

The Wiki has several topics that might be of interest on diet and ketosis.

We welcome your contributions, and suggestions on books and podcasts you've found helpful. I hope you've found some other athletic outlets that are a little more brain-friendly than boxing, since exercise may be at least as important as diet. Exercise has other benefits: As my then 4-year old son said of his fun-loving, wrestle-on-the-grass uncle upon his law-school graduation: "He can mow the lawn, but he's not really a grown-up." At 53, give yourself permission to sometimes be "not really a grown-up". At 67 with ApoE 4/4 and a healthy brain, I try to practice that myself.
4/4 and still an optimist!

Hi BGTex, Welcome it is so wonderful so hear your story, and I am so glad to hear you are a runner now. I assume you have listened to Mark Hymans last podcast on dementia, The Science of Preventing (and Reversing) Dementia with Marwan Sabbagh a neurologist who has taken up running and meditation in his 50s as he feels that this is the best thing we can do for brain protection.
I personally have not done a full keto diet but know that this is one of the best websites around that could help you on the start of your journey in this space The diet doctor which I use a lot with my clients. Please keep lurking around here, it is lovely to have you as a new member and keep asking any questions you have. Welcome again, SamNZ

I had not heard that interview yet, so thanks! That was great to hear. I run simply because that’s the exercise I’ll do. It’s great to hear that it’s somewhat favored by some brain specialists.
