I'm a newbie!! My intro.

Thrilled to find this site! Here is my intro. Born in California- moved to Fortaleza, Brazil, in 2000 where my late husband and I ran an orphanage for 17 years- moved back to the US in 2017 due to husband’s illness (stage 4 melanoma)- have now settled in South Carolina near my kids and am recently remarried. My occupation is research and program development for emergent and third world orphanages and vulnerable children. I am 55 years old.

My mother always had “high cholesterol,” and so have I. It stayed in the mid-200’s until a few years ago when it began creeping into the 300’s. (No one talked breakdowns with me- just said it was high.) At that time my general docs wanted to prescribe statins, which I refused due to my research and evaluating my own results/breakdowns. All other numbers were great! Low triglycerides, no insulin resistance, while my weight fluctuated I was always active. However, I recently succumbed to my US HRT doc and did the Boston Heart Study. Total Cholesterol 364. I loved the breakdowns, for information is power. Not only do I create cholesterol, I hyper absorb it AND am Apo E3/E4. My doc pointed out my increased risk of AD on top of the increased CVD risk.

A workout friend of mine- female, 67, and oh so beautifully active- had recommended the Bredesen diet prior to this test. My HRT doc did the same afterwards! I have now read Bredesen’s book, skimmed your primer, and realize my paleo low carb/high fat diet was probably not good for my genetic make-up. Why? Because I did not pay attention to types of fat!

What info am I currently seeking? I am extremely active and require over 2000 calories per day. I mountain bike, road bike (a 50+ mile ride this weekend), hike, cross fit, and will try most anything. I need a higher protein percentage to maintain my 55 year old female muscle mass. It has been difficult to find a good daily diet outline since each person is different, but a good guide would be wonderful. IE: my two meals a day consist of Blah blah blah. Are there any Apo E4 athletes out there who can share their guidelines to maintain muscle mass? Any protein powders you add? Maybe additional protein is not the key? Hmmm.....

My doc also has me taking ezetimibe along with red yeast rice. I already take much of what Bredesen recommends- CoQ10, D3, etc. Anyone else out there on ezetimibe? I still refuse statins but went for the red yeast rice.

Lastly, I want to thank the powers that be who put this website together. I love the welcome to the primer! GENETICS IS NOT DESTINY. I, too, am a firm believer that while I may have no control over some risk factors or disease that may come my way, it is my responsibility to take control of what I can. Thanks for this website which is helping me do just that! I look forward to learning, and hopefully contributing, in the future.

Welcome, Paige!

Are you familiar with Dave Feldman's work? His site is Cholesterol Code, and a vibrant affiliated community of people striving to understand the implications of higher lipid levels in conjunction with overall strength and well being has formed on Facebook at Lean Mass Hyper-responder.

Hello Paige1964,

We are also thrilled you found this site! I would like to extend a very warm welcome to this community.
It sounds to me like you have made some beneficial discoveries about your health and are navigating through what works for you personally.

Regarding the ezetimbie, I've quoted your message in hopes that someone else who is also on this forum can provide you some insight into their own experience.

That's wonderful that you were able to find and peruse the Primer already. Dr. Stavia, a member, has done such a nice job maintaining it. Yes, genetics are not destiny, and there is such hope in that and so much that is in our power!

Beyond the Primer, the wiki page also has many helpful links about diet, lifestyle, supplement discussions and much more that you may want to explore.

We are so glad you are here!

Best regards,
Melanie
