Too late for HRT?

Post by ElaineB »

I was having a discussion with a friend about HRT, thinking it might be helpful to me (should I find a doctor who will prescribe it). However I had an early menopause 23 years ago and she said it wasn't wise to start it so long after the menopause.

Is there a window of when it is possible to start HRT after the menopause? I'd love to know! If I am too late what could be done to raise my almost non-existent oestradiol?

Hi Elaine, I wish there were a simple answer to your question. This is one of the most controversial areas. I recently listened to several webinars with Ann Hathaway, a hormone specialist, who is generally very pro-bHRT. She cites many benefits it offers for post menopausal women. But even in those presentations, there were questions about timing. There was a lot of evidence that women who receive bHRT at menopause or near have both neuroprotective and cardiovascular benefits. ( or at least this is how I interpret the information) There is not a whole lot of information from clinical trials related to women who begin many years after menopause and who are using bHRT, not conjugated esquine estrogen and medroxyprogesterone, both of which should be avoided.

We have an enormous thread on HRT you can find by using the Search function (looking glass the left of your user name). I have also attempted to provide a link here.

If you do decide to try HRT, transdermal estradiol is the recommended form and for any woman with a uterus taking estrogen, regardless of age, progesterone is essential to protect the uterine lining.
