If one is oversensitive I should have said something simply like "here is more information."
I am very passionate about this misunderstood topic as I have studied it for over 10 years.
Unfortunately there are not many good medical solutions without side affects some can cause damage with side affects and are risky.
I had migraines with aura no pain...they are very scary. The only reason I knew what it was is because I got my first at work and my co-workers knew what they were. I always thought that there was a lot of pain with them.
My trigger was light! Also I have not had any since I eliminated refined carbs and finished menopause. I thought I was having a stroke at first and went to the doctors immediately who did a EKG and referred me to an eye specialist...where they just scratched their heads. I get little auras sometimes when I open the curtains and the sun flashes in my eyes.
My son gets them, I used to get them. I checked known snps for migraines, and he seemed to have almost all of them. One that we both have is one that doesn't break down glutamate easily (which explains the family sensitivity to MSG) - Glutamate is also implicated in Alzheimer's. After experimenting, I discovered supplementing with taurine keeps me from have a daily low grade headache I used to wake up with. I also put a fitbit on my son and discovered he wasn't getting enough sleep, especially at his dad's.. We are trying to fix this. I also found a LEF brand supplement called Migra-ease that have several of the ingredients that are known to help. So far, at least we can knock it out pretty quickly with the supplements and a pain killer.
10 years ago I started getting ocular migraines- at first it was linked to fruit (a ripe banana would immobilize me for 3 days). So by trial and error I realized I could not eat much fruit and stick to a keto diet . I would still get them however. Any change in pressure (especially air travel would also bring on a 3 day migraine). Other triggers included lo han sweetener , stevia etc;
I am now 7 weeks into a modified AIP diet (modified to my APOE4 and modified to follow more Jack Kruse protocols) and my recent vacation should have immobilized me for 3 days on each air travel end. I even ate some papaya while away as it was hot and in season where I was.
So I am just mentioning AIP as it excludes a lot of foods I still see people eating (all seeds, gums, nightshades, chocolate etc) as I thought it might be worthwhile to investigate. Note that I started up CT again to reduce brain inflammation (Kruse's CT) so that might be part of the equation as well. But for now I am happy because it's been over 7 weeks- 8 weeks on Monday including air travel and no migraines!
I had my first migraine when I was 9 and many since then. No one thought of causes in those days, 1960's. By my early twenties I'd started noticing when they happened, not stress related, food related. I was having at least the start of a migraine after most meals, full blown a few times a week. Notice when the migraines happen and you may see a pattern. Also ginger in great for most people, gives me migraines, same with turmeric and coliander which are in the ginger family. MSG, hydrolized anything, yellow #5, nutrasweet, all of these things give me basilar migraines. At menopause I acquired extreme blue light sensitivity. I use 600 mg of alpha lipoic acid twice daily. I still have to avoid triggers, but minor slip ups don't cause problems. Alpha lipoic acid can irritate the stomach and should always be taken with 8 ounces of water. Finding triggers is the luckiest thing that can happen if you have migraines.
I dealt with migraines for about a year, quite a number of years ago. I never knew what started them, and don't know why I never had them again after that year. I think the general consensus was "stress," but that never seemed plausible to me. It's interesting that you have been able to narrow down triggers. Have you ever done food sensitivity testing? (not allergy, but sensitivity?)

I just wanted to add my experience with migraines with auras here and what eventually helped. I began getting them in my 30's and they went on for a few years. Then I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease so had to maintain a 100% gluten-free diet. That was the end of the migraines! I didn't even realize they were gone at first, but after a few months of no more migraines, I realized my gluten-free diet had been the cure. That was in 1997, so I've been free of migraines for a very long time now.
Outstanding, Kathygrz! To be rid of migraines is wonderful. And to realize that the simple fix was removing gluten - amazing. Have you found other issues to be affected positively by the removal of gluten?
Welcome to the site, by the way. If you have not come across it already, our site Primer is at this link: viewtopic.php?f=33&t=1418 It's an outstanding document, written by physician member Stavia, with a great deal of information.

Delighted to have you here. You're definitely ahead in the game to realize that gluten is a problem for you. Look forward to more of your comments.
