Which ketone meter should I buy and where?

Newly discovered to be Apo e4 homozygous, unfortunately. Need to start monitoring my ketones. The reviews of all of the ones sold on Amazon show problems: inaccurate, hard to get test strips or test strips are too expensive. Does anyone have experience with an accurate machine with easily available strips they can recommend?

Some of our members use Precision Xtra or Keto Mojo. You can read about pros and cons of both meters by using our search function: magnifying glass tool bar right upper corner of website.

Hello Grateful1.....
I can tell you of my experience. I bought the Keto Mojo meter that measures both ketones and blood glucose. I have just about used up the first 60 strips that came with it. I found it very helpful in sticking to a dietary regime. When I had carefully adhered to the Bredesen diet recommendations for a few days, my G and K were both well within the recommended ranges. When I yielded to temptation and had some ice cream or cookies, the G immediately spiked up and the K immediately dropped down. Since the meter is still a new toy, I have been using it multiple times per day. It has taken me two to three days after a bad boy meal to get back into the recommended readings, but I am able to do it, so I think that somewhat validates the accuracy of the meter. I just ordered a new set of test strips, plus the control solutions to calibrate the meter. If anybody is interested I will post results of the control solutions tests.

I have been using the KetoMojo for about a year. The glucose test strips are inexpensive and in addition to glucose, it gives you hematocrit % and hemoglobin. The ketone test strips are much less expensive than others I found at the time I purchased. The ketone strips are $1/strip. Accuracy is hard to devine, but the readings seem to reflect my eating patterns and fasting variations.

I concur with donbob. The Keto Mojo is the one I use with all of my clients as well as myself.

Hello donbob...here is my experience with the control solutions. I ordered them with my second set of test strips, so I ran control tests on the last of my first set of strips, and the first of my second set of strips. I'll start by saying it was not intuitively obvious how to interpret the test results. I had to view Keto-Mojo's video on the topic, and puzzle over my individual test kits awhile before I became sure I was interpreting the tests correctly. Each canister of test strips has a little matrix on it, which shows a range of expected test values DEPENDING ON WHICH CONTROL SOLUTION CODE YOU ARE USING. Each vial of control solution has a code number and you have to use that code number to determine what is the range of expected values you should receive on a test. Once I understood that, here are the results I got:

On the Ketones test, my results from the control solutions were dead center in the middle of the expected range, both for the original batch of strips and for my new batch of strips. This, plus reasonable correlation to diet and exercise, gives me a high degree of confidence in those readings.

On the Glucose test, the results were not quite as impressive, but still plenty good enough for my purposes. Both tests were well below the midpoint of the expected range, though still within the expected range. For my first set of strips the control solution reading was about halfway between the midpoint and the bottom of the range. For my second set of strips the control solution reading was even lower, that is, closer to the bottom of the expected range, but still within the expected range. So my bottom line on the meter is I believe it, I use it, and I consider it well worth the money.

I do have some lingering questions about the glucose test readings but they are not really related to the accuracy of the meter, and maybe not appropriate to this thread. I'm going to look for a more appropriate thread to post those questions in, or maybe even venture to start my own thread.

I found this comparison between Ketone meters very helpful:
