Which comes first, diabetes or Alzheimer's?
Re: Which comes first, diabetes or Alzheimer's?
It sounds like they're saying that Alzheimer's first is just another potential path to diabetes, along with the traditional one. I recently listened to this interview (scroll down to 'Screening for diabetes ...') in which Dr. Nathan mentions that the future of diabetes research is delineating the different types. Sounds like our future with Alzheimer's research. He didn't mention one that arise from Alzheimer's, and I'm not sure he'd known of this possibility.

Yup. Multifactorial aetiology at this stage....
Re: Which comes first, diabetes or Alzheimer's?
As I mentioned on the previous page, there is a weird divergence in the epidemiological data for Alzheimer's and diabetes. Mid-life obesity is associated with AD, but late-life underweight is associated with AD. Nobody knows what happens in between.
I think this supports the idea that there are (at least) two completely different sets of patients with different disease etiologies: Diabetes -> AD and AD -> Diabetes
