@PhillyFree. In most clinical and research settings, large doses of lithium carbonate are used. This is the traditional medication form of lithium used in psychiatry. Large doses are required because lithium carbonate absorbs so poorly. [It is kind of like calcium carbonate in this respect.] And the large doses produce a variety of side effects which are troublesome. Recently (20 years ago) lithium orotate became available as a dietary supplement on an over-the-counter basis. Instead of using grams of lithium carbonate, sub-100 milligram doses of lithium orotate seem to provide better results. Many non-psychiatric-and-otherwise-healthy people are taking 5 mg or 15 mg doses of lithium orotate for general health and wellness reasons. I've done it. I did not notice anything positive or negative, but that does not mean that something subtle wasn't happening. There are many testimonials online in contrast to my observations.

crime rates are lower with lithium in the water.

VERY interesting, Philly. Wonder if there MIGHT be some potential for lithium to be used as a preventative treatment for AD in high risk patients? It will be interesting to see how further research plays out...

Lithium in the water supply, Spunky??? How Big Brother can we get? I still think adding fluoride is outrageous (and harmful), but Lithium I just know Lipitor is next. Sigh.

Lithium orotate is some 4x stronger per mg than the lithium carbonate typically used in bipolar.

Lithium orotate is being used as a trace mineral supplement in amounts 500 mcg to 10 mg (and in bipolar at 120-480 mg along with 3000+ mg of plain fish oil). In the trace amounts, lithium orotate is a thyroid stimulant in an imprecise manner, so Hashi and Graves ppl beware, and I think anyone trying lith oro should start very low. Effects can be felt within 1-5 minutes. Being Hashi, my thyroid was overstimulated at any amount, which became apparent within a week or so. I abandoned experiments some years ago.

It shouldn't be hard to find out how much lithium is in your water supply. Most of the places I've lived recently have had less lithium than normal in their water supply. I supplement with 25 mg. of lithium orotate (1 mg. lithium)/day (a fifth of the typical supplemental pill avail.) But if I lived somewhere with more lithium in the water supply, I might stop taking it.

I was taking Lithium Orotate as one of my supplements (after I read of lithium's potential AD benefits); that is, until my "anti-aging" doctor (read - I get my HRT from him lol) said he agreed with all my supplements but the lithium. He just didn't believe in taking too many metals. Soooooo...I stopped.

Not to say that I might not restart. He's a hormone doctor, not a neurologist. Nom sain?
