Copied from the article listed by Schwartz336:

"Available data have shown that patients with a diagnosis of MCI, whatever the cause, had improvements or stabilization of cognitive decline, whereas the results in patients diagnosed with AD or vascular dementia, although evaluated in small samples, did not show evidence of benefit following treatment with homotaurine."

The mini mental status exam (MMSE) was the tool used to determine improvement over one year. Those with amnesic MCI improved from a MMSI of 24 to 26 (out of 30). Those with non-amnesic single and multi-domain MCI improved at month 4, then slowly declined.

Interestingly, at the beginning of the trial, "all patients underwent a complete clinical investigation, including medical history, neurological examination, mini mental state examination (MMSE), a complete blood screening (including routine exams, thyroid hormones, level of B12), neuropsychological examination, neuropsychiatric evaluation, and neuroimaging consisting of magnetic resonance imaging (1.5 T MRI)." Too bad they didn't repeat the neuropsych evals throughout the year, since it a more accurate test of cognition in comparison to the MMSE.

Is this a drug still being tested or can you already buy it someplace?

Yes, it is also called homotaurine and the study that shows positive prevention for 4/4 carriers used 450mg.per day.
It is available from Amazon from England and also through Canada. If you need help finding it let me know. The product is known as Active Mind. (3 50mg tablets twice daily. Start slowly and build up to that dose.

I use Homotaurine at a dose of 150 mg per day per this study-http://www.jpreventionalzheimer.com/261 ... ntial.html

Be forewarned when taking the full dose on an empty stomach with alcohol as it can make you nauseated, break out into a cold sweat and a little dizzy. I experienced this when we went out with friends to a brew pub pre-dinner one night. Let's just say my first and only beer did not meet me with that warm and fuzzy feeling but one of fleeing out to my truck before I puked or fell to the floor. I recovered and take it every day as It seems like a good bet when your risk of Alzheimer's is over 50% by 80 years old.

A 450 mg per day dose seems like a lot. I am going to have to dig deeper into that dose recommendation as, I already feel a little nauseated and warm off 150 mg. Perhaps this feeling is similar to how Parkinson's patients feel on L-Dopa?

What is everyone else's experience? I'm sure some people here have found this little 4/4 nugget of hope.

Unfortunately Homotaurine is not available in the US as it sits in limbo with the FDA . I get mine from Canada. If our government prevents me from getting it from there. I will move there.

eBay at first and then homomotaurinehealth.com recently. I'm sure you can find it cheaper as it is available across Canada. The funny thing is I had seen billboards while in Canada for Vivimind (homotaurine) before and never knew what the stuff was. Now I do. I can't buy it where I live.

I currently have a three month supply. Hopefully there won't be a large supply draining apoE4.info run on the stuff  . I also hope my supposedly free country won't bust everyone for importing a pretty harmless substance that the bureaucrats haven't put their blessing on in it's current low margin inexpensive form.

I hope this helps my fellow 4's ...in having more hope.

Kenny,
The data demonstrates that Tramiprosate is effective only at the higher dose of 450 mg/day.
Best to start and increase slowly - 50 mg per week. Using that regimen you don't even know that you're on it.
Best of luck -
