Some strains of lactobacillus are known D-lactic acid producers, so it might depend on the type of probiotics they were taking. Especially problematic are those found in commercial yogurts.

But I generally agree that we probably shouldn't take them unless needed for a medical reason (like me right now, following antibiotics). Or at least pulse them, on & off. There's just so much we don't know about the microbiome so we're tinkering with something we don't understand very well.
