Hi all,
I was diagnosed with MS about 22 years ago. I discovered I was APOE4/4 about 4 yrs ago.
I take an intermuscular injection drug weekly called Avonex. It's an interferon beta drug. My nuerogist told me it cuts the incidence of exhabration by about 40-50%.
I feel very fortunate in that I've had a pretty benign course with this disease. My symptoms have been mild and spaced far alart. My last MRI showed that some demylination spots reduced in size. I've either got a pretty benign case or the drug is working well.
I've wondered if this Avonex drug could be nuero-protective against AD or is it harmful? If anyone has any thought on this, I'd sure love to hear them.
It's a good question for my nueroligist right. I got to find a new nueroligist in CT. This guy is nice but he seemems not much schooled in the latest and greatest AD prevention stratedgies. He seems uninterested in AD prevention discussion He seems only concerned with MS.
After 22yrs of mild MS, I think I need to find a nueroligist who's more specialized in the latest AD prevention stratedgies. If anyone can refer me to a good nuero in Connecticut, please let me know. The functional medicine Drs are incredibly expensive & nonparticipating. Dr Fitzgerald is here but I don't know if it's worth the thousands those visits would cost. I follow pretty close to the Bredeson's protocol, vits, keti, exercise, sleeo and its optimized for mthfr but I've not gotten any follow-up blood tests.
Thanks for listening!

I have Multiple Sclerosis and APOE4/4
Re: I have Multiple Sclerosis and APOE4/4
SweetSue There is a connection between MS and Alzheimer's, it is aluminum. The good news is drinking silica rich mineral water is effective at removing aluminum from our bodies. Here is a link to a write up about the research. High levels of aluminum were found in the brain of people with MS - I will post a link to that research. https://www.hippocraticpost.com/innovat ... sclerosis/

Here is a link to the study where they found high levels of aluminum in the brains of people with MS. I hope you can find a neurologist who can help you find ways to improve your health and keep your brain healthy. http://www.mdpi.com/1660-4601/15/8/1777

Hi SweetSue. From what I know many of the lifestyle changes that may help to delay or treat AD may help with MS. You can see the overlap by comparing Dr. Bredesen's recommendations with those of Dr. Wahls (Terry Wahls), for example. Those might be areas to focus on. In my limited experience it seems unlikely that any specialist would be an expert on both MS and AD. You might need a combination of specialists who are willing to work together, if only to a limited extent, or to learn from one another. Or, if you become educated enough about the AD side of things you might be able to convince your current doctor to order some extra tests to provide information you'd want for that.
I don't know specifically about Avonex. But I assume anything it does to help with MS, thus inflammation, might also be helpful for lowering the risk of AD as well.
