Can glutathione level be too high?

Post by marymac »

My lab result for total glutathione was flagged as high. The reference range was 176-323 - mine was 325. I've never taken any glutathione supplements, but I am a little obsessed with foods that are high in glutathione (broccoli, Greek yogurt, etc.). At first, I was happy with lab results, but now I'm wondering if my high level means my body is having difficulty absorbing it?

Curious --- did you ever find out if high levels were bad or you might have had difficulty absorbing the glutathione? I'm getting ready to add it to my supplement regime, doing some research and started here on the forum. I have difficulty absorbing a number of things, didn't think to look to see if this was an issue, but now will! Thanks.

I mentioned it to my neurologist, and he just blew it off like it wasn't a big deal. Would love to know if you find out anything!

Came across this: High blood glutathione levels accompany excellent physical and mental health in women ages 60 to 103 years. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12486409 Seems to me that high levels are good... However, they don't state what "high" happens to be :-)

Seems that the testing is not always accurate, most people have low amounts and strive to increase, there are huge benefits to having higher levels, can't seem to find any negatives to high levels with exception of problems from long-term supplementation possibly causing lower zinc levels.

I find that specialists, such as a neurologist, generally don't know much about nutrition or other specialties...but I'm sure there are many exceptions to that observation.

I listen to this guy a lot even though half the time he talks way over my head :-)...here's a podcast where he talked about managing glutathione. I haven't listened to this one but will at some point: https://chrismasterjohnphd.com/podcast/ ... tatus/#lab

Chris Masterjohn discusses this in one of his glutathione podcasts I heard recently. I think the glutathione test is pretty expensive at Life Extension, so if it's not covered by insurance I don't think I'd bother, given the testing issues.

Has anyone tried IV glutathione in doses over several weeks? I haven't been able to find anything on IV injection from Chris Masterjohn. Are there genetic reasons to avoid it (mthfr, etc)? I do get a headache when I try oral glutathione, implying it's not ideal for me. But it's just an antioxidant, so perhaps there's no reason to be concerned?
