I work for the most diverse company you can imagine. I work daily with Cambodians, Laotians, Filipinos, Vietnamese, Mexicans, Guatemalans, Salvadorans, Hondurans, Peruvians, Chileans, Brazilians, Swedes, Ethiopians, Israelis, Japanese, Chinese, and Ukrainians. Today I was speaking with a lady from El Salvador and we were talking about the five major illnesses that plague Americans: Obesity, Diabetes, Heart disease, Cancer and Alzheimers. She said that they don’t have those in El Salvador. So, I asked her what the typical diet is for average, working class people there, which is most of the population. And I asked her what her diet is now in America. Here’s what she told me:
Salvadoran Diet American Diet
Breakfast: Breakfast:
Fried Beans (fried with coconut oil) Sugared Cereal with milk
Fried Plaintains (Same oil) Pancakes with syrup
Fried Eggs (Same oil) Coffee
Coffee (locally grown)
Fresh fruit (No juice)
Lunch: Lunch:
Beans with Cheese Hamburger (bun of white bread)
Roast Beef (They don’t eat pork much) Pizza
Chilis from the garden French Fries (fried with you know what oil)
Cooked Yucca Chimichangas (made with white flour)
Coffee (locally grown) Burritos (made with white flour)
Fresh fruit (No juice) Ice Cream
Coffee
Soda pop (Coke, Pepsi, etc.)
Dinner: Dinner:
Carrots Same as lunch fare
Potatoes Spaghetti & other pasta
Cooked Rice Various soups [canned] (Asparagus, Tomato, Chicken)
Corn tortillas Coffee
Beef bone broth/soup Sunny Delight
Cow foot broth/soup (That’s what she said) Soda pop (Coke, Pepsi, etc.)
Coffee (locally grown)
Fresh fruit (No juice)
Probably half of El Salvador has immigrated to the US and this is what they eat and they get American diseases from eating the American diet. She says nobody gets Alzheimers and many people live past 100. Interesting.
No Alzheimers in El Salvador
Re: No Alzheimers in El Salvador
Sorry, the two diets got mushed together. You'll have to separate them.
Re: No Alzheimers in El Salvador
Hi LB; You've found another quirk of our software: it doesn't like tables! I thought this information merited showing the contrast, so here's the two diets with the Salvadoran on top and the "Salvadoran-American" on the bottom. Of course, poverty, lack of access to fresh, affordable food (I've worked in areas where the "quik-mart" is the only place in walking distance), the proliferations of junk foods in all kinds of stores, ads on TV, all make it very tough for many people to eat healthy foods. Thanks for sharing.

4/4 and still an optimist!
Re: No Alzheimers in El Salvador
If you could do a bit of editing for me. On the Salvadoran diet, 'various soups...' should be on the American side. Same with Soda pop in the dinner section. They don't drink much pop there. Thanks.
Re: No Alzheimers in El Salvador
Also, they don't drink Sunny Delight there.

All done; should have done a bit of proof-reading myself!LBKnudson wrote:Also, they don't drink Sunny Delight there.
