Does eating oats help ?

Post by gsuryana »

My mother who is in stage6 was recently admitted to icu because she accidentally ingested insecticide. Fortunately she was fine, because the insecticide was non toxic.
My mothers cognition improved in the hospital. They had fed her oats. Does eating oats have beneficial.effects on Alzheimer's patients.?
I never used to give oats because it is in the list of foods to avoid in bredensen protocol.
Can someone tell me if they have found oats to be beneficial for cognition?
Thanks,
Ganesh

Welcome gsuryana!

I have no information as to oats and cognition. In 2006, I was a whole foods vegan. I bought my first glucometer. I would run organic whole oat groats through a mill to make my own oatmeal. Then I watched them spike the heck out of my blood sugar, so quit eating them (from like 80 to 140 mg/dL).

This paper suggests they may supply a relative benefit compared to what she normally eats. "Due to compositional differences in protein and fiber content, glycemic scores, and rate of digestion, oatmeal may provide a slower and more sustained energy source and consequently result in cognitive enhancement compared to low-fiber high glycemic ready-to-eat cereal."

Hello and welcome Ganesh!

I found out that I was an E4/E4 in my mid 20's and I worked with my primary care provider on a holistic plan that I try to stick to daily - supplements, food, exercise, stress management - but I am definitely an amateur being so young. I do not know if in general if eating oats is beneficial for cognition but in general the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics state that oats are one of their top suggestions for grains, as it is a great antioxidant. Here is the article if you would like to review: https://www.eatright.org/food/vitamins- ... ly-healthy.

I haven't had any in quite sometime, but I'm a fan of occasional oat bran for some variety. I tend to view these in my head as sort of acceptable junk-ish foods -- relatively low in nutrients, relatively high in possible antinutrients / allergens, moderately high in GI, but without much scientific evidence to show any real harm in moderate consumption. A lot of the studies showing benefits sort of fall into this category of "compared with y unhealthy things most people eat regularly, x natural foods look quite healthy."

My go to meal with oats is to cook with wild blueberries (the oats turn purple), then add in cacao powder and/or cinnamon extract, stir in hemp milk, top with some walnuts and ground flax or chia, and sweeten with monk fruit or stevia. Timed after a workout, I would feel confident ascribing a "brain-healthy" label to the meal. With just water + oat, I'd be less inclined to promote it.

I'd also second apod, that oat bran, as a fiber, might be doing something positive.

Not to rule out oats, but I would also look at what else they gave your mother to deal with the insecticide. For example, any binders (like charcoal)? If so, you might also look to the treatment for why she might have done better.

And also in the not oats vein, some folks on this forum have had mold issues in their houses, and improved by moving and/or fixing the house. I'd also rule out if some environmental factor exists where she live, which would not have been present when she was hospitalized.

Good luck and many hugs for trying to help your mom. It's not easy to take care of a loved one with dementia, and many of us have been in your shoes.
