High Sn-2 DHA for Brain Benefits crossing BBB

Post by Vikingman »

I saw this in another group and thought I would post to see what this group thought.

I am reposting this from another group that I am in. Looks interesting.

"DHA must be in SN-2 position in order to cross BBB.
Therefore we shall prefer to eat fish rather than taking algae or fish oil.
But....data in following study is showing that there are 2 algae oils - Schizochytrium sp. and Crypthecodinium cohnii oil which contain 60,86% and 42,64% DHA in SN-2 position which is more than a fish has !!!
Taking algae oil of these species would be a better source for getting DHA in SN-2 position!? What do you think?"

Sounds very interesting. Thanks, Vikingman! Are any companies making this kind of algae oil as a supplement?

Also Spring Valley Algal-900 DHA Softgels (450 mg DHA per pill) contain Schizochytrium sp.

It should be also mentioned that the Dr. Yassine's trial of DHA:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32690472/
discussed on Peter Attia's podcast, used 2.1 g of algal DHA daily. In that trial, after 6 months, levels of DHA in CSF increased in APOE4+ participants by about 0.06 micrograms/ml (in APOE4-, about 0.08 µg/ml). Since the CSF volume is about 100-125 ml, it seems that this supplementation results in an approximate increase of DHA reaching the APOE4+ brain via CSF by 7 micrograms. In other words, about 0.0003% of the swallowed DHA can get to our brains.

Thanks, JulieAnnie and DoubleBond. Sounds like a minimal change, but also a minimal investment in change.
