Finding a Practitioner specialising in AD prevention when not living in US!

Post by Catherine Bridle »

Hi,

I am a 42 year old female and have recently found out that I am E4/4. I have done a lot of reading and research since finding out but I am keen to find a doctor who can guide me through the process of doing all the tests etc. I live in Australia and as far as i know, there is no one here that specializes in Alzheimer's prevention. Does anyone know of anyone in Australia who does work in this area?

Alternatively, does anyone know of any practitioners in the U.S. who would be willing to do appointments over Skype?

It's a lonely road trying to do this all myself and having a qualified and knowledgeable practitioner guide me through it all would be helpful and reassuring.

Thanks for any replies.

Catherine, go to the IFM site (Institute of Functional Medicine) - Find a Practitioner and search on Australia.
https://www.ifm.org/find-a-practitioner/
Then go to the individual website of each of the doctors etc you find, and see if they say somewhere if they are Bredesen trained.
Its incomplete as it wont show you Bredesen-trained who aren't IFM trained, but it will give you some leads eg Dr. Anne Chappel and Dr Chris Chappel. There are others, & also in NZ eg Dr Isabel Bertran-Hunsinger does Skype.
I have no idea how good these folk are, and at some point you have to register with Apollo Health in any case so your doctor and you can get the actual ReCODE report, and the advantages of the huge body of clinical data behind it. When you register with Apollo, they send you a list of all the Bredesen-trained practitioners in the location(s) you are interested in.

Hi again, Catherine!

Australia is actually well-respected for its research on Alzheimer's disease and prevention. Here are some resources from our Wiki: that are not specific to Australia, but may be helpful. Especially these days, many practitioners of the Bredesen protocol provide tele-health visits using Zoom or Skype, so you may want to check websites of people you find in either of the resources to see if that is an option.

Searching for a Healthcare Practitioner gives some links to sites for general info on prevention and includes a link to the Institute for Functional Medicine that "mala" mentioned in her reply to you.

ApoE4-Aware Healthcare Practitioners includes providers who have been reviewed by members. Links to a Practitioner Review are provided when that's the case.
We do have to note that inclusion on this list does not imply endorsement by ApoE4.Info, Inc.

You can also use the Biomarkers of Dr. Stavia's Primer in which she prioritizes which tests and body measurements she believes are most valuable.

As a 42 year old, you are probably a few years (or more) away from peri-menopause, but may want to start reading about some of the new research into the role of estrogen and brain health. One place to start (and there are many possible sources!) is the recent book The XX Brain : The Groundbreaking Science Empowering Women to Maximize Cognitive Health and Prevent Alzheimer's Disease by Dr. Lisa Mosconi, Director of the Women's Brain Initiative at Weill Cornell Medical Center in NYC. Here's a link to a TED talk she gave in 2019 on the topic How menopause affects the brain

It can indeed seem like a lonely road. But no matter where in Australia you are, you have a friend in Virginia who is further along the road and believes that your generation will have many more lighted paths to travel soon.
4/4 and still an optimist!

Thank you Mala and NF52 for replying to my post and for the all the info and links. I will have a look through and see if i can find someone. And thank you NF52 for the link to that recent book by Lisa Mosconi. I have been thinking about peri-menopause and how it might not be that far away so looking into this are now would be good.
