Which curcumin?

Postby lumia » Sat Feb 07, 2015 2:15 pm

I think a lot of users have some kind of curcumin in their regimen. What I wonder is what is the brand of curcumin do you use? I have personally cycled between Meriva, BCM-95 and Longvida, and may consider Theracurmin on my next bottle.

The problem is just... there're so many kinds of branded curcumin supplements, which do you all prefer...?

(Note: There's no intention to disparage C3, CurcuWin, or any other product.)

When I introduced myself to this group, I was asked, "Are you taking Turmeric?", to which I responded, "Not yet."

Then I went to Amazon and looked up Turmeric. LOTS of choices. I read some reviews and decided to try a bottle.

The instructions were for 2 capsules a day. I first tried one in the morning and one in the evening and instantly had sleep problems -- the kind where you can't turn your mind off. So I cut back to one in the morning only.

About halfway through the first bottle, I figured that my body had probably gotten used to the stuff, so I went back to 2 a day. But I take both in the morning.

This is the one I've been taking.

I've tried all 4 of the ones you list. I do best on Longvida, at least my joints hurt the least when I use it. I take two a day.

So perhaps, my knee pain lessening with the Terry Naturally 750mg(http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EEEGEGM/ref ... FCM2&psc=1), is just dose-related as I did not notice any joint benefits with Jarrow's 500mg or Longvida 500mg.

Well, Terra (BCM-95) and Jarrow's (C3) both supplies 500mg curcumoids. In Longvida the "500mg" refers to whole extract and yields 100mg in curcumin (Source: PMID 23013352).

(Also note Meriva yields 1/3 curcumin by weight, and Theracurmin 10%.)

ConsumerLab offers this. Many more details on loads of supplements are available at consumerlab.com Well worth the modest subscription fee to help support their important work. They talk about bioavailability of tumeric/curcumin in the various forms, but only in general terms. I am not sure whether "bioavailability" necessarily equates with crossing the blood-brain barrier??? Turmeric is taken for a number of health issues, many that don't have to do with the brain, so I'm not sure this term is as relevant to AD prevention as "crosses the BBB"? I recall switching to Longvida because of a study showing it crossed the BBB. Anyone done research on the other forms and the BBB in particular?

When I first joined the forum Gilgamesh recommended the Life Extension brand. If you use the search function you can see his reasons.
