Bredesen Protocol and a 'break' off the supplements

I have been following a version of Bredesen protocol for about 3 months now. Is there any scientific reason why I should or shouldn’t have one day a week off all the supplements? Or a break from the supplements from time to time? Would one day off a week or a month off every year make the protocol more effective?

Just in case my newbie message was lost amongst the other messages.

Just looking for advice from any members following Bredesens protocol. Is it advised to take the supplements every day forever? Is it advisable to take a break? Do others on the protocol take a break from time to time?

I'm not on the protocol, but some believe that food like antioxidants are not supposed to support our cells all the time. That to prop up cells that are having trouble is inviting trouble. So the theory would say that by going on an antioxidant break of sorts the cells that are struggling with reactive oxygen species etc may no longer have the support to survive and may undergo apoptosis. As the theory goes, better to let them perish than have them eventually get to the point where they need an alternative energy pathway to survive. Theory saying these marginally effective cells eventually have to find another way to exist and that is where much trouble starts.

I have no idea if there are studies on these types of theories, have to imagine if there are they are petri dish studies. However, it seems that some researchers and with new testing technologies that there may start to be some possibility of testing mitochondrial "effectiveness". I can't imagine these studies will show much with certainty for another five or so years, just because they probably involve lots of inferences and hypotheses from data that is new but not yet associated with hard outcomes.

I’ve just been reading something about this on the IFLScience feed. A review of research on intermittent fasting, where one the variable was supplementing with antioxidants, (vitamins C and E) found this:

“One somewhat surprising finding is that when participants took daily oral supplements of Vitamin C and E, the benefits from fasting disappeared. It seems that because the cells were relatively sheltered from experiencing any oxidative stress that may have been caused by fasting every other day, they didn’t respond by increasing their natural defenses and improving their sensitivity to insulin and other stress signals.”

Not a big serious study, but the same as you write, this study suggests mitochondrial 'selection' or effectiveness with lots of antioxidant supplementation.

Think I'll change the way I take supplements and do fasting.

Argggh, can I give up on everything now? The only fasting I can reasonably manage is nightly, but I take Vit c daily. I guess I could take it every other day. Boy do we ever need *more science*!!! The unproven theories will cause me dementia via their stress-inducing mechansims!
