For My Fellow EVOO Epicurians
Coratina having the highest polyphenols season is over - now it's Koroneiki's turn at bat. I believe our current Koroneiki is at 475 polyphenols, and Gilgamesh's is the same.

Hey, what does the peroxide level in these oils imply? I think of peroxide as an oxidant??? Just wondering if you also look for low per?

Circ - excellent question! And I'll freely admit I didn't know the answer - but now I do. Just found this, and you're right. Peroxide value goes to oxidation:
The peroxide value of the oil must be < 20 meq/kg. This is a measure of oxidation, and a high peroxide value indicates that an olive oil will become rancid more quickly. There are some other chemical parameters used by the IOC, primarily indicating shelf life and to detect adulteration, but the free acidity and peroxide value are the biggies.
The current Koroneiki that I got at my local store, Under the Olive Tree, has a peroxide value of only 4.9. That's pretty spectacularly low, I think.

WHOA. Don't be so quick to rule out the Coratina just yet, good people! Looks like it has the same crush date (May 2014) as the Koroneiki, and even higher polyphenols (by only 5, but still), and LOWER peroxide (2.5):

Lilly, you link to the exact same olive oil I linked to below. Here's the link again:
http://amphoranueva.com/store/index.php ... uct&id=217
Note:
Price for 750 ml, Amphora Nueva:
$18
Price for 750 ml, Under the Olive Tree:
$31.99
I strongly recommend buying from Amphora Nueva for an additional reason: they are "politically" active in the anti-fraud movement in the olive oil industry. They are part of the gang at Veronica Foods (http://www.evoliveoil.com/) that started this:

That's because that one, too, is the same oil. There aren't that many olive oil producers in South America!LillyBritches wrote:Coratina having the highest polyphenols season is over - now it's Koroneiki's turn at bat. Re: For My Fellow EVOO Epicurians
The new EVOO harvest is in at Amphora Nueva and will never be fresher. The EVOO with the highest polyphenol count is currently the Chilean Favulosa coming in at 438. Apparently the taste is similar to the Chilean Coratina, with a grassier (as opposed to fruitier) note. The price per 750ml bottle is $21.00. I’ve pre-arranged for members to receive a discounted price of $15.00 per bottle if you order by the case. A case is 12 bottles. Shipping and packing from CA to IN was $20, YMMV depending on where you live.
Here’s the web address for information on other varieties:

To receive your discount, contact Nate directly at: nate@amphoranueva.com or (510) 704-9300

Hmm, I'm not seeing this oil listed -- did you guys drink it all already?Juliegee wrote:The new EVOO harvest is in at Amphora Nueva and will never be fresher. The EVOO with the highest polyphenol count is currently the Chilean Fabulosa coming in at 438.
Re: For My Fellow EVOO Epicurians
Sorry, I meant to mention that I learned about this particular variety by emailing Nate and asking about their highest polyphenol count. Apparently not all are listed on the site.
Even if you just want a few bottles, call Nate or the store directly to get this variety.
