Long story short. Is every aspect of the protocol perfect? No. Is the protocol effective for every patient in every situation of cognitive decline? No
Does the program work for every single patient ? No.

Does any kind of pharma work? Not even f$iggin close yet. Are there any better protocols out there for cognitive decline? None that I have found in 3 years of constant research.

Before making any claims about the protocol and book I HIGHLY recommend trying the protocol first hand and reading the book cover to cover. Then politely and scientifically make your logical arguments. At that point people might listen and a constructive discussion can follow. Until then as a researcher, doctor, caregiver, and science based guy, I will not even entertain a response to quackery. That is a big big statement, and if I was part of MPI or Bredesen himself, I would think seriously about fraudulent lawsuits.

Just saying, but I am just a guy doing my best to get my wife better and feed ideas and discussions off the other insanely dedicated people on this website. Now if I was talking to anyone privately, a much tougher tone would be in order, and would love to go toe to toe with doubters and haters.

That being said, the program has offered some mild results for Sandy, not ground breaking, not life changing, and I still stand by Dr. Bredesen and the protocol. Nothing could be more of a vote of confidence than that. I am open to other protocols and pharma as well; JUST have not found them yet.

Thanks moderators for stepping in here.....these things can not go on unchecked.

We will not tolerate those members who chose a path being criticised or denigrated for their choice, which is effectively what calling their paradigm's opinion leaders "quacks" is doing.

I just finished the $14 e-book. It's all the information from Dr. Bredesen's recent articles, work with patients, and recent conferences in one place. That alone is worth the money. If you've read the studies, gone to the conferences, and are a regular reader at APOE4.info you will recognize most of the stories and advice.

For those who suffer from cognitive decline, their family and friends, and interested family doctors this is a valuable book. It reads like a guidebook. It's clearly meant to be applied. And used as a reference. It might just help to make the functional / integrative / preventative approaches to medicine more mainstream. They ought to be - many of the approaches are effective and less expensive.

Most of this can be summed up as "staying healthy in an unhealthy world"....which is not easy.

I find it curious that some consider Dr. Bredesen's recommendations to be out of the mainstream. Most of the recommendations are what every healthcare professional would say - eat right, cut out the excess sugar, get enough good sleep, exercise, don't stress too much, avoid environmental toxins, etc. Some of the "how to" accomplish these things might be new - I would hope so! It seems to me that the worst case scenario for someone would be that they try the reCODE protocol and don't see improvement. But most of these recommendations would tend to help folk's general health - weight loss, depression, diabetes, stress levels, cardiovascular disease, etc. Since there aren't other effective alternatives, there's no opportunity cost to worry about here.

A rare exception might be the debate about statins. The idea that statins could be bad for brain regeneration is pretty sound - the brain need cholesterol and derivatives. But I'd be interested to hear that debated with some cardiologists.

I think the primary problems for the general public are that (1) big business has a vested interest in selling use unhealthy products and (2) most physicians aren't willing/able to put lifestyle programs like reCODE into place for their patients. The book will help with both, I think. The more people are informed that better our policies will be and the better our research $ will be targeted.

Some of the explanation of neurology was new to me, for example the cleavage of APP (amyloid precursor protein) at one site to yield 2 anti-AD fragments versus 3 sites to yield four pro-AD fragments. This is in Chapter 5, which Bredesen begins by writing:

. . . not everyone finds the death of a microscopic cell compelling, so while reading this chapter you might find your eyelids becoming heavy .
. . . you may wish to skip this chapter . . . . But who knows, if you stay for the science, you just might find it interesting.

The book is written with passion, in clear plainspeak English. As Bredesen says, if necessity is the mother of invention, maybe passion is the father. He really tries to kick his reader in the pants, so to speak, to take up the protocol, if only in babysteps at first. For me, having seen AD up close, no kick is necessary. This disease is relentless, and so must we be.

I agree! It's meant to be applied. And someone could apply most of the program without understanding all of the biochemistry.

Stavia, having just finished it, I'd say it depends. My hubby would not make it past the first couple of chapters. It's not that he's not interested in his health, he'd just prefer to work with his doctor who can interpret his labs and guide his decisions. The extracurricular health reading he does is much more limited than folks in this group, for example, or even most of my friends and family outside the forum.

My criteria would be, if you know they've willingly purchased a health related book or magazine in the past, then yes, do it. If they have expressed concern about getting AD, then it's probably okay because they might be really motivated. Otherwise, it could be a toss-up if they will make it through the book.
