Prion Disease Antibody Helped Memory Substrate

Post by circular »

I can't get the article 'cause it's behind a paywall, but my New England Journal Watch email noted it:

SUMMARY AND COMMENT
A New Approach to Alzheimer Disease
Steven Dubovsky, MD Reviewing Klyubin I et al., J Neurosci 2014 Apr 30; 34:6140

In a preclinical study, an antibody currently being studied for prion disease also shows positive findings for the biological substrate of memory.

Really interesting. Seems to go along with the "Mad Cow" connection. I'd like to learn more too if anyone has access.

I've been seeing the prion theory pop up here and there but haven't really looked into it.

I think this was one of Rudy Tanzi's ideas and the basis of his recommendation for a vegetarian diet to prevent AD.

Looks like the Dubovsky article is actually a review of this research published in April. Full text at the link.

Thanks, Susan. Boy, I've been going down the proverbial rabbit hole with this one  The prion theory has been around a long time. The idea that AD is transmittable is intriguing. Rudy Tanzi think's it's transmitted by eating meat. Given the profit-driven commercial feedlot system of meat production in the US...he may be on to something. Here's a nice overview of how the prion hypothesis has panned out from the 70s-present.

Back to prions...just when we thought it was all about the meat.
Grass plants can bind, uptake and transport infectious prions, according to researchers.

I thought there are experiments showing the only way to "transmit" AD was to implant Ab oglimer infested tissue directly into the target brain, which makes it not very transmittable at all. (and of course we know it's not transmittable because, you know, there are no epidemiological patterns supporting an even weakly transmittable nature)

Re. PrP antibodies - as far as I can remember, they need to be fed directly into the brain, which in turn tends to develop antibodies to try and fight them off, finally resulting in severe inflammation. Unlikely to be helpful, although they may prove a useful research tool.

Just came across this father alarming web page about prion disease but it's not well sourced or otherwise every academic. It does mention a few researchers still looking into this.
