Can I practice the Bredesen protocol without a trained practitioner?

Post by Julie G »

That's a question that I get… a lot. I thought it would be most expeditious if I answered here so that many people could see it and others would hopefully chime in with their thoughts. The answer lies within you; your knowledge of your current health status, your willingness to dive in and learn, and finally your comfort level with taking charge of your own health.

I've been practicing a home brew version of the Bredesen protocol before it was "a thing." I'm guessing that I represent many of us old-timers. When we began our E4 journeys, Dr. Bredesen's seminal paper hadn't even been published. We began adopting a multifactorial approach because it made sense based upon the evidence available. Many of us, like me, are doing so without the luxury of Bredesen-trained practitioners. No such helpers existed when we began our health-optimization journeys. Many of the basic tests recommended by Dr. Bredesen in The End of Alzheimer's can easily be ordered by yourself and/or a helpful local physician. Some of the more advanced tests (if your journey takes you that direction) may require a practitioner that is more highly trained and open to Dr. Bredesen’s approach.

We created this non-profit, in part, to support and educate other E4 carriers to share what we've learned and to continue learning together. We've more recently launched a Practitioner Review Forum to share practitioners that we’ve found helpful on our journeys. You'll notice many are not Bredesen trained. We’ve also created a wiki list where ApoE4-Aware practitioners can add their own contact information. Our hope is that more and more members will take the time to write reviews creating an invaluable and robust resource for our fellow E4 carriers.

If your cognition is too severely affected (or your time is too limited) that you can’t take the deep dive necessary to educate yourself, using a Bredesen-trained practitioner might make sense... if you can afford it. If you're only experiencing mild symptoms and/or are more focused on prevention, and you like to learn about your health and cognition, and you relish the challenge of finding (and even educating ;)) a helpful practitioner; you might be a perfect candidate to put it all together yourself. I do, but knew I had to reach out to a specialist, still not Bredesen-trained, when I learned that a Lyme disease co-infection was contributing to my presentation. Drae, who continues to humble me with her progress, is a recent member, who beautifully exemplifies what this self-guided journey might look like. You may want to search her posts for more information while bearing in mind that each of us will have a unique journey.

Many of us have spent thousands of dollars and countless hours to make this information freely available to you. We’ve even created an all-volunteer Support Team to guide you. We’ve recently taken that initiative a step further by partnering with the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy to provide (very inexpensive) health coach interns to help you on your journey. You can learn more here. Feel free to use the search function on our forum, newly highlighted with a magnifying glass on top right-side toolbar, and always feel free to ask questions. We’re a warm and supportive community, genetically family, and everyone will do their best to pitch in and help you.

Lastly, while all of our staff are volunteers, it still takes money and volunteers to keep our organization running and sustainable. Consider donating your time or talent to keep our free resource available to all. (Learn more here.)

Wow, Julie! LOL I think this group has brought that word and the state of being of "WOW" back into my life. I have to say, it really is working for me. It has been just over 3 months since I read Dr Bredesen's book and found the Apoe4 forum. And, I am feeling better physically, have more energy and my cognition is better in multiple ways. I am very excited to be changing my life. I have not found a doctor yet but I am availing myself of the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy in the person of Sara Capece so I have access to some very good insights on the Bredesen ReCODE protocol and the functional medicine aspect of things. (Thanks so much, Sara!) I am definitely going to try to stay on board with Sara at least until I do get hooked up with a Bredesen trained doctor or such.

Julie, the help I get here is what has made this possible and that is not just flattery. I literally would not have known how to or been able to make the progress I have made without the knowledge and encouragement found here. I strongly recommend taking advantage of this group -- in a good way! and making use of whatever resources are available. I believe we have saved my life (again). But, that is another long list of stories!

Thanks to you and you all! Go, you new people. This process is a lot more accessible than it looks to be when you first read about the 36 holes, and, it works. This week it really sunk in to me that these practitioners have the skill to turn around Alzheimer's for, so far, everyone who will go after it (with the exception, possibly, of the very far advanced cases). I am pumped! Prevention and reversal are available now, and your life will only get better.

Thank you so much Julie! I have appreciated all the help in the two weeks I have been on this site. NF52 has also helped me immensely, mostly through her good sense of humor, stories, and just being empathetic and pointing me towards studies. I did order the Dr. Bredesen book three weeks ago and am just starting it, finding it hard to research all this while still working full time and trying to decide if I want to be in the Generations Phase 2 study of CNP520 or CAD106 and meeting with the team doing the screening.
You all have put in countless hours, as you said Julie, and we ride on the shoulders of your efforts and all of you who contribute in these forums. A big thank you, and I hope as I read more, research more, and just flat out...know more, I will be of help to others as well. Currently, I am just trying to get comfortable with plunging in and trying some ideas (fasting, eliminating certain foods, finding someone to help in the Bredesen protocol) vs. just absorbing all this for awhile and making some choices over time, without feeling like plaques and tangles are developing every day I wait!
4/4. Do something today that your future self will thank you for.

Hi Julie. Thanks for this (and all the rest too!)

I've seen this from a couple of different perspectives now. We tried to formulate out own plan with my mom but she was too far along, the Bredesen work was too new, and her family doctors were too resistant to make much headway. I don't know if a reCODE-trained functional medicine doctor would have helped. I think maybe it would have in this particular situation, as you suggested. I've also seen highly motivated family members create their own programs, modeled after reCODE or similar plans and get their family doctors, cardiologists, or PAs on board so that they can get the tests done. The books, articles, and (especially) the apoe4.info forums have been essential for them.....not just to get the information but to get some support too. I've found it is sometimes hard for me to tell the good sound advice from the poor advice....it's all such a mix of peer-reviewed studies, books, interviews, podcasts, TV spots, and websites....with my background I'm supposed to be able to tell the good from the bad!....but, wow, sometimes it's tough. The site has really been helpful for this - folks are well-informed and the discussions usually stick close the science. Finally, I've seen family members go to functional medicine doctors (with reCODE training) and come away with mixed feelings. They got lots of attention and lots of tests. Also, some help synthesizing all the results. That's all good. But it was an out of pocket cost and they were sold a lot of supplements (unusual ones I can't decide about myself) and were steered away from some medications their other doctors had prescribed.....which gave them the mixed feelings. It's different than what they are used to. I guess, one way or another, we are all just finding out ways.

In short, the apoe4.info forums and the wiki (which is pure gold!) are, in my humble opinion, lighthouses on a dark and stormy ocean! :)

Hi Tom... Not sure where you are with your Mom but I wanted to offer that during the Bredesen / IFM training one of the physician trainers mentioned they were having some success with patients who had reached the point where they were unable to dress themselves. After being on the protocol for a while they became able to dress themselves.. maybe a small success but something to think about. I also wanted to mention that as a fairly new health coach... I have recently seen this remarkable reversal of symptoms that we are all reading about with one of my clients. So yes, the protocol can be overwhelming but when closely followed it has the potential to work!

Such a great point, Tom. I didn't mean to suggest that using a Bredesen-trained practitioner would solve all problems. They're all finding their way too. This is a complex, multifactorial, individualized approach. Finding the right practitioner, even if they ARE Bredesen-trained can be tough. It would be really helpful if you would review any practitioners that you or your mom have worked with to build our Practitioner Reviews. The more we share, the more we can help one another.

Thanks Tom & Indywoman for your feedback. As Julie says, most of us who have been here before Bredensen's first paper was published in 2014 have worked hard to put this together for ourselves. Likewise, we feel it is very important to share and create a structure to make this task easier for those who follow.

As Tom points out, we don't always agree about what is optimal. However, if you hang out with us "old timers" at a meetup, what you'll see, is while we all have somewhat different approaches, if you viewed us from 30,000' (9,000m), and compared us to how most of the rest of the world lives, you'd think we were all doing the same thing!

Thank you all!

Using the supplements properly is what really concerns me about going it on my own. I have no knowledge of supplements. And, I have Parkinson's disease. I don't know how supplements would react with my Parkinson's medication. So, I am looking for a doc who has had the training. Thanks for the Practitioner Reviews! I will look at those!

ncrocker, do you have a pharmacist you trust? They can help you sort out what supplements might not work with your meds.

For those they don't know anything about, start really, really low and watch for side effects. Only move up the dose if it's not giving you the results you want.
