New Test Predicts Alzheimer’s Memory Loss Far in Advance

Post by Jmac »

Three articles, all pretty much the same info, same topic.

----

Researchers may now be able to predict memory problems far in advance by identifying certain brain activity patterns. In a new study out of Gladstone Institutes, scientists tested this new method in mice with the goal of identifying Alzheimer’s memory loss sooner—so interventions can be established as quickly as possible.

Alzheimer’s disease could be predicted by a brain scan – decades before symptoms develop, according to a new study.

Scientists have identified a type of brainwave that protects against the devastating neurological illness.

Known as sharp-wave ripple (SWR), it plays a direct role in spatial learning and memory formation in humans, mice and other mammals.

Alzheimer’s illness might be predicted by a mind scan – a long time earlier than signs develop, based on a brand new research.

Scientists have recognized a kind of brainwave that protects towards the devastating neurological sickness.

Referred to as sharp-wave ripple (SWR), it performs a direct function in spatial studying and reminiscence formation in people, mice and different mammals.

Thanks for sharing. I can see how this would be a huge help for research. And maybe we could know if our interventions are working. That would be good.

But I have to admit my first thought was: this is terrifying. How would things change - insurance, job clearances, etc. - to have this on a medical record?

Mixed feelings.

Frankly, I`d prefer not to have such a test because as yet there`s no cure for alzheimers, so I wouldn`t want to know if I was destined to get it.

I agree. I took it a step further and wrote a fictional futuristic story in my head while thinking about it...Soylent Green meets any number of other sci fi movies. :-) In the real world, with all the gene testing going on, I can envision the bad side of where things could go. Even now once someone is officially diagnosed insurance becomes a nightmare, especially for long-term care.

I am with Fiver. My first thought, this is terrifying. I don't know if I want to know, especially that I am doing everything I can to prevent AD.
