Re: Antioxidants which cross the BBB?
Several years ago I added NOW brand's "CurcuBrain" to my supplement regime. It claims to be a form of curcumin (a powerful antioxidant) that's been shown to cross the blood brain barrier. I believe there are other antioxidants that do this, but this is the first one to come to mind for me. Will be interesting to see what others suggest

I've been using CurcuBrain for a long time too. I've never been aware of brain benefits, although they may be occurring. I take it for pain and any other benefits it may provide.babl wrote:Several years ago I added NOW brand's "CurcuBrain" to my supplement regime. Recently Life Extension magazine wrote about a new formula they say is the best yet. Mind when you read the article that they sell the supplement it is about, and I'm not sure, but it often seems that no sooner an animal study is out they make a product.
I've toyed with trying this, but they bind the curcumin to fenugreek, and I have to wonder whether that could cause any adverse affects on top of any others possible from the dose of curcumin. I'm always thinking about how studies look at certain endpoints but not all. If there's improvements with the endpoints studied, then yea! But what about all the other biochemical networks that also might be influenced, possibly not in a good way?
That's an example of a more 'global' limitation I see with trying to flood the brain with antioxidants.

Re: Antioxidants which cross the BBB?
Sulforaphane crosses the BBB and acts as an indirect anti-oxidant. It activates other natural anti-oxidant systems, lasting days compared to just hours for traditional anti-oxidants like vitamin C. So, that's another one.
