An opportunity to participate in an E4 trial

Post by Julie G »

I'm sure that many of you may have seen this paper from The Buck Institute:
Reversal of cognitive decline: A novel therapeutic program
http://www.impactaging.com/papers/v6/n9 ... 00690.html

It's very impressive in that cognition was reversed for 9 of the 10 participants. Half of whom were E4 carriers. I've communicated with the author, Dr. Dale Breseden, and received this note from him:
Dear Julie,
> Thanks very much for your note. We have been working toward
> understanding the basic mechanisms of neurodegeneration for 25 years,
> and it is very exciting for me to see patients who are, for the first
> time, actually improving in their cognition, often back to normal,
> and remaining so. We also have new basic research, which should be
> published over the next few months, that identifies a completely
> novel mechanism by which ApoE4 confers risk for Alzheimer's and other
> chronic illnesses.
>
> Meanwhile, I wonder whether it may be of interest to include your
> entire group in a study, in which the goal would be to reverse the
> cognitive decline for those who have started it and prevent cognitive
> decline for those who are currently presymptomatic. As I mentioned
> in the paper, just over half of the initial patients are ApoE4
> positive (and additional ones not in this first paper).
>
> Do you think the group (or a subset thereof) would be interested in
> going through the whole protocol? Also, do you have a sense of how
> many are symptomatic vs. asymptomatic/presymptomatic? If there is
> significant interest, it may be of great interest--and hopefully
> great effect--to get a significant fraction of the members into the
> protocol, starting with identifying the key driving parameters for
> each person, and then putting together a personalized program for
> each.
>
> If you think there may be interest in this, please let me know.
>
> Best regards,
> Dale

If you are interested in learning more, please let me know ASAP so I can let Dr. Breseden know how many may be interested. I, for one, am jumping at the opportunity. I'm basically already following his protocol. The opportunity to have such close monitoring is invaluable. I encourage everyone to consider.

JG, you are the best! And what a generous offer from Dr. B!

Count me in. I follow most of what's in the list, too, with melatonin as the big exception.

3/4 and no symptoms as far as I know. ;)

Awesome Julie. I would be in. I would say people should take advantage of the offer in my
Opinion.

You're right ten times over, WA. We are truly on the precipice of something huge...I really can't believe researchers are finally getting it about AD prevention and are devising prevention strategies. I never thought we'd see it. I hoped, but didn't hold a lot of confidence that it would happen. So cool.

Yay! So glad so many are signing up! Jul, I think you can safely tell the good doctor that it's a go on our end. :)

I think of 2 things however. 1 is that our befores may be not that much different than the after because many of us follow very similar strategies/protocol.

The other thought was when I read the study. I have joked for decades that if/when I got AD, it would be hard to tell as I have always been dingy. Losing keys, etc. I get quite forgetful at times. I have had high amounts of stress at times in my life and I think my forgetfulness/dinginess follows that.

If it weren't for my computer telling me what to do when, I'd have the meeting troubles one of the people in the study had. Even still, I forget a meeting from time to time or double book. But on the other hand, I'm usually forgiven because many of my coworkers do too. Happened just yesterday at work where my coworker got his meetings confused.

I guess it is all about level and how often and if it effectively makes one completely disfunctional.
