Re: The Homeoviscous Adaptation to Dietary Lipids (HADL) Model

Hi Circular. I liked your suggestion that both sides might be right. Nice attempt at conflict resolution! The authors propose an interesting model. It's fun to think about. But that rebuttal was brutal, mostly because there is a ton of evidence on their side. (Although the familial hypercholesterole...

Re: Potential new treatment target for Alzheimer's disease [Debio-025, a Cyclophilin A suppressor]

Hi Brian, I saw this yesterday as well. This is a large paper, very thorough, with big effect sizes. Debio-025 really did seem to fix BBB and blood flow problems AND prevent the worsening of cognitive problems in these mice carrying human apoe4 genes. Sadly it did not restore lost cognition but I'm ...

Re: Finasteride and Apoe4

Hi kayakmac08, this is an interesting question. I've never heard or read anything about it, on way or another. In terms of the biochemistry, I'm not aware of any clear rationale why it would be bad for e4s. Might do a search later and see what is out there.

Re: 3/4 here, new, mother dying of Alzheimers...

So sorry to hear about your mom. My mom passed away about a year ago from Alzheimer's. It's tough. However, as a 3/4 in your 40s you aren't doomed. There are things you can do to reduce the risk. And there are medical advances in the pipeline that are almost certain to allow us to reduce our risks f...

Re: Summary of Massachusetts General Hospital’s Multicultural Alzheimer’s Prevention Program ApoE Symposium

Yes, DAG is common and does a lot of different things. As far as I could tell from the seminars, the key take away was that e4 shifts the profile of lipid types in cells - some were reduced, others were increased. So many possible consequences - from changes in membrane fluidity, inflammation, enzym...

Summary of Massachusetts General Hospital’s Multicultural Alzheimer’s Prevention Program ApoE Symposium

Something I wrote after attending a recent symposium on apoe4. It lost some of the formatting in the transfer but sharing in case anyone is interested. I hope everyone is doing well - staying healthy and warm. On Friday approximately two hundred scientists from around the world met virtually to sha...

Re: STATINs

From my experience I totally agree with the usefulness of the coronary calcium score. I think we'll see this become even more common and accessible in the near future. It was such a relief to get my score. And unusual - how many accurate tests are there we can count on currently? Just one minor thin...

Re: APOΕ4 Lowers Energy Expenditure and Impairs Glucose Oxidation by Increasing Flux through Aerobic Glycolysis

Hi everyone,I hope you're all well. I have this paper on my reading list. In case it's any help, I wrote a short summary of a previous but related article from the same research lab below. The author was a speaker at an online seminar series in the spring and summer and presented this earlier work. ...

apoe2, while protective on its own, doesn't cancel out apoe4

New article in Nature: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-020-18198-x

Interesting....apoe2/4 had outcomes similar to apoe4/4, i.e. the 2, while protective on its own, can't cancel out the 4.
